Hi. I want to thank everyone in advance because as usual, you guys always do a great job of helping. Well anyway, I want to setup a survellience system in my home that would be quiet and run 24/7. I want it/them capable of attaching on a ceiling or wall. There was an incident that occured yesterday in which couple of kids decided it would be fun to TP my house at 2am. I saw the little scoundrels get away. Luckily, my neighbor has his survellience camera on his house 24/7 but they sit at his window and aren't very stealthy in a way  But they got a license plate # :D So I'm happy. But now I feel as if I need something of my own. So I'm asking you guys ever so nicely to help me find something that wouldn't exceed $400. I am not an expert in networking and security, but no novice either. Thanks again guys :p

why not get an IP cam with a biult in webserver

this will record when there is motion and email it to you

Again i'm not an expert in this stuff, can you please explain. Infact, treat me like like a novice :p . Can you guys recommend any products, anything at all will be helpful. I just don't know where to start.

The Dlink IP based cams would suite you well I assume. Newegg sells them and basically you will run CAT5 cable or if you choose the wireless model, and connect them to your home network and allow you to record to your PCs hard drive.

This is really a fairly easy project. You could hire someone to do this for you if you choose.

The problem with that solution is you have to leave your PC on 24x7 to record the shots. I recently had to research the same thing for a business and unfortunately to stay under your budget you really sacrifice quality.

alik4041, How many cam's are we talking about here? Internal/External? Where are they aiming? I assume mounted inside and watching the front of the house through a window?
