Wellll, I finally took the plunge to linux but am currently having some remorse. First off, does anyone know if they're are native x-fi drivers for linux yet? I've looked everywhere so I doubt there are, in which case, is there anyway to get my x-fi working properly ( on ubuntu 6.10 ).

Also, I'm having the hardest time getting most things that didnt work 'out of the box' to work at all on ubuntu. First off...I cant play any .mpg or .mov files, rhapsody doesn't work at all, there's something f'ed up with my repositories ( apt-get cant find vlc or eclipse ??? ).

So, sorry for the rambling but I guess my questions are:

are there linux x-fi drivers?
how do I edit/see what repositories are availible?
and finally...
my wireless card drivers were installed automatically...is there any built in wireless network tool?

1) not at the moment, shite even Windows-Vista doesn't have X-Fi drivers and they won't for some time, and even then they won't have game-compatability for a longer time still

in fact it was what MS did with DirectSound which caused Creative to severly back OpenAL (the Linux/cross platform sound arch). Creative have said that they will release a binary-blob for linux this summer. Until then ALSA have the X-fi working to some extent (as in sound, cant have effects), it is quite a manual tasks mind

2) err some Ubuntu user will be along to help with the repositories, can be done, you just gott a enable something (disabled by default for Patenting issues)

3) you should have a tool called "NetworkManager" either installed or the package-manager can get it. THIS is a very good tool and is what you need

I don't use Ubuntu anymore, but I can answer your repos question.

2 - You have to enable/add the universe repositories to your apt sources.lst file (/etc/apt)

Off the top of my head, I believe you'd just append "universe" to the lines in sources.lst where it goes to ubuntu archive servers to get packages.

For an easier way, apt-get install synaptic and use that to install packages - it's a GUI front end to apt, and I think it has an option you can select to use the multiverse and universe repos.

Vista has had x-fi drivers for many months now, way back in beta. I've been using them.

And this week they releasd final drivers too.

And I have sound in every game I have played.

For an easy way to get your .mp3 playback working (among many other things), you should give Automatix2 a try. It's a script that will download any given selection of programs to install, most of them non-free multimedia codecs or plugins, such as Flash 9 and windows video codecs, and of course mp3s.

You can find it at http://www.getautomatix.com/.
There's also EasyUbuntu, which does pretty much the same stuff. As with many things Linux-related, it's very much a matter of taste which one you use ;)

i had to install 2 sound cards my X-fi and my Audigy2 ZS in my system when i boot into windows xp i use my X-fi but Ubuntu i use my Audigy2

Yeah, I use my onboard for linux and my x-fi for windows too. What's weird is that I could never get Ubuntu to work with my audigy, but it would work with my onboard that wouldn't work in any other distro.

apparently creative is working on alsa x-fi drivers.....

Finally companies are starting to get serious about supporting Linux.

Linux has a chicken and the egg problem - people won't use it unless they have drivers, but you can't justify creating drivers without users.

Ugh!!!

hey, thanks for the help guys! after searching a little more, there is no linux drivers for the x-fi, but there may be some 2Q 2007. I wouldn't hold my breath.

So, my linux experience has been getting progressively better....but if I could get my windows cd to work I would switch back in a heartbeat.
