Can OS X be run on XP? I've heard there is a hacked version available

I was at Circuit Shitty today and one of the sales reps told me about a hacked version of OS X that is able to run on Win XP. I guess this sounds possible since the Mac's are using Intel hardware now. There is probably a way to bypass the need for "authentic Mac Hardware", or something:confused: ..
Anyway if anyone know the name of this OS X version, I'd appreciate it.

I've also tried Google and it was a no-go. I've heard there is a WIKI page that is dedicated to this, but was unable to find it either.
 
If there was, it would likely not be legal to do so, hence we cannot discuss this here.

just think how slow it would be to run an OS inside an OS
 
There is no legal way to run OS X on anything other than Apple hardware.

You can virtualize XP and run it on OS X at very close to native speed (though there is no useable 3D acceleration at this point) with either Parallel's Desktop or VMWare's Fusion.

Here's XP running in "coherence" mode in Parallel's Desktop on my MacBook Pro:

Running in XP? Are you confusing XP with Wintel hardware? We'll AFAIK you can't run OSX under XP, but you can run it on most run of the mill PC hardware with a few hacks. Thats as far as I'll be discussing it though :)

Thats so cool :) I had the same thing running on my MacBook, but I think I didn't have enough RAM :(

Its like XP and OS X had a bastard kid.
 
google would be worthless for this kind of things. you need to use other kinds of search engines.
 
VMWare's Fusion Beta 2 now comes with experimental DX8.1 3D acceleration across all Macs.

But yes it is illegal to run OS X on non-Apple hardware and therefore cannot be discussed here. That includes installing it to boot natively or to use it in a Virtual Machine environment. Apple does not allow virtualization of OS X at all.

You might be interested in the InsanelyMac.com forums however.
 
yeah as everyone mentioned this is illegal, and running OSX inside of XP or through virtual machine would be slow, since no virtual machine really supports it, but if you did have a cpu with virtualization it might speed it up.
 
PearPC is probably what the guy was talking about. Its legality is on the line and it is really the reverse of Boot Camp, etc. for running XP on OSX. PearPC itself is not illegal as it does not come with any OSX files or installers, it is simply a VM type thing.

It is VERY slow though even with good hardware and you havel to do a lot of the work yourself for setting it up as it is on the line of legality, so we cannot help you or talk about it around here for example :)
 
your sig has some pretty beefy specs for someone thats been living in a cave for the past 5 years.

Hahahahhaa.

Virtualized Operating Systems run at very near native speed on these new processing architectures; I personally found that VM's on the new Intel chips felt smoother than on the AMD chips but I can't provide any facts, just a feeling.

Intel's VT-x extensions etc, have greatly increased performance of virtualized OS'.

XP on top of OS X in Parallels runs at about 98% of if being installed natively on the same hardware, except that it does not support 3D acceleration, and even so, the only VM that does offer 3D acceleration is *very* beta and is DX 8.1 only (VMWare Fusion on OS X).

Can you give me a link to the benchmark results that have lead you to that conclusion?

Oh that's just personal experience moving from my Athlon 64 to my Core 2 Duo PC; it just felt a lot smoother running on the Core 2 PC than the AMD64 one, sorry I didn't mean to pass it as fact, let me correct my other post.

type os x x86 into google, that will find you your wiki. its fairly easy to tear your hair out depending on your hadware, though i think they have an installer now that is pretty functional. not legal of course, and not stable enough to do anything really, but kinda interesting to do.
 
It's OSx86, not OS X x86, btw. I should know since I'm the guy that dropped the first working generic DVD installer on the unsuspecting world in 2005... hehe :p

But anyway, www.insanelymac.com is the "home" of the OSx86 Project nowadays... might consider popping in there sometime and having a look around.

In a different thread on these forums (I'm to lazy to find it) someone said that VMWare might be releasing a version capable of virtualizing OSX (no source, probably BS, though it's hinted at in the article linked above).

I dislike Microsoft as much as the next person but at least I don't have to buy Microsoft hardware to run there damn OS.

WTF???

PearPC isn't a reversed Boot Camp. It's a PowerPC emulator & virtual machine. It has precisely dick to do with Boot Camp.
 
The simple answer to the OP's question is: Yes it can, but OS X has to be hacked (hence OSx86) to do it, and discussing that crosses the fine line we can't cross soooo... let's nip this one in the bud.
