i dont know if this is the correct place to post this..feel free to move it to correct place.

i was wondering if anyone here uses opendns.com for their DNS settings? im noob so i was wondering if anyone here uses it and how well it works. thanks
 
I use it on a dsl connection and think its a good service ..others say that it's slow for them .. so try it and judge for yourself .... :)

 
I've been using opendns.com at my house for a while. It works good on this connection because my cable companies DNS servers are horribly slow for whatever reason. My thoughts behind this are because they outsource their DNS to a third party so when I do a DNS lookup it goes out to the internet, routes around and then hits their DNS before coming back in. opendns is a few hops closer and their servers appear to be faster at serving replies. That being said, we have our own in-house caching DNS servers at my office and they are quite fast compared to opendns as usually we don't have to go out and do any lookups since it's already loaded in cache and they are on the same network so it's approx 2ms away instead of the normal 80 ms I would get with our upstream ISP's dns. OpenDNS's servers show to be about 100 ms away from my office so lookups are a bit slower...not by much but if you figure 80ms for every dns lookup that adds up to quite a bit of time over a month/year I guess.

Overall I've been happy with opendns, give it a try and see what you think.
 
I use OpenDNS because my ISP dns servers have been on trouble for last 3 weeks, i just added the dns servers at router setup and worked great
 
I use OpenDNS for my home machines but I do NOT use it for my servers. Becuase the service will always provide a response to a query even if the domain doesn't exist. They don't return a NXDOMAIN if the domain doesn't exist. This was really interesting with my mail server. Mail server now uses localhost. :)
 
I use Opendns.com as forwarders for 3 domains I do IT work for, plus my own.
 
I found out about OpenDNS a few months ago however, I have since decided not to use it as I've read some articles about the security of OpenDNS (or rather, lack of) and haven't been impressed.

The CEO of OpenDNS used to be heavily involved in online Ads and, therefore, heavily involved in Adware, Malware and Spyware. That pretty much made me put a big line though OpenDNS.
 
Found about them and tried it out. I found it much faster for new sites but slower for repeat visits as I was not able to set it up to cache on my local router (for various other reasons).

I think the speed depends on your location, current dns, etc. If your ISP DNS is very slow you will love it, but if your ISP DNS is very fast you will not.

The only thing it does is if it cannot find a record it throws an ad page (which when i got to it a few times never threw any popups or anything, just plain text ads).
 
I recently made the change to OpenDns and I notice it is slightly faster. I would rather see a "Page cannot be displayed" then the OpenDns suggestions though.
