Official BenQ FP241W Thread !!! Info, Pictures, Reviews

Received my BenQ monitor today. Really good monitor even came with the firmware 1.1 fix. However, I have a couple problems with it:

1) 1 dead red pixel at the bottom of my screen and
2) The monitor arm mount is for some reason off by 3 mm's causing my screen to be slanted at a 5 degree angle. This is very irritating to look at.

Does anyone here with this monitor have this issue and know what on the monitor arm to adjust to fix it?

Thanks!

Anyone know how to track the package after it enters the US? The tracking number NCIX sent me only says it has enter the US and en route to the destination. I emailed NCIX but their auto reply says it could be up to 2 days before they reply to my question. The package cleared customs on 2/7. Thanks.

Not sure that it is possible. Once my FP241W crossed the border I had no further tracking updates until the day that it arrived at my door. Your best bet might be to contact the Canadian shipper (Canada Post, probably) and ask them if there are any options (e.g. do they get a tracking number from the USPS?).

Do yo know of any decent replacement stand for FP241W. I know that both DELL LCD stands (2405 and 2407 model) do not fit.

I actually researched this a week or so ago (I wish that the FP241W stand would allow the monitor to be moved further downward, closer to the base, than it does). The big issue that I ran into is that most third-party stands are not designed for heavy monitors like this one.

The options I found are below. All are pricey.

- Ergotron Double Stacked Flat Panel Monitor Stand
http://www.ergotron.com/ConsumerPro.../mid/386/PRDID/15/language/en-US/default.aspx

- LS9109 LCD Stand
http://www.ergomart.com/lcd_monitor_stands/lcd_monitor_stands.htm

- Spacedec Computer Stand for Single Monitor
http://www.ergoindemand.com/computer_stands_5.htm

- atdec SD-FS-DV Spacedec Freestanding Double Vertical Monitor Mount for 12" to 22" Displays - Retail
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16824995101

If I wind up getting a replacement stand, it will probably be the Ergotron since the Ergotron would allow me to mount a second monitor (above the FP241W) down the road, yet it is around the same price as the single-monitor stands.

For those that ordered through NCIX paypal, how many days did it take for them to ship it or update there site / email with tracking info? I ordered on Friday, which said it was in stock, and still says today, and I haven't received any shipping information.

Is this typical for them? I didn't really expect it would ship on Friday, but Monday for sure.

I ordered on a Thursday (evening), and it shipped the following Tuesday (evening). NCIX seems to be a bit slow in processing orders. I just ordered a motherboard from them, and it took them three business days to process that order.

Those you bought it from NCIX with the firmware update, can you tell me it's the black/black or black/silver one?
(critical thing for me.... i hate silver.. well anything else than black .... brrrr :p)

I bought mine from NCIX in mid-January. November 2006 with the firmware update applied by NCIX. Mine was black/black.

I also wish that it will go lower a bit... I might try this one.

I ordered using Paypal on a Friday, shipped on a Monday. Still waiting for the dog sled to deliver it. *sigh* over 2 weeks for it to come down I-5 from BC to CA is a bit much. I still don't regret going with NCIX because there was a clear reason to order from them over NE, the firmware updates and the no dead pixel policy I paid for, but all things being equal, if NE had the firmware fix, I'd have gotten it from them.

Initially, when I was ordering my FP241W from them, I felt the same way (i.e. buy from a US vendor if possible, given the simpler payment and more-local shipping). But then I saw NCIX was offering a huge discount on a motherboard that is widely available in the US, and so I ordered it from NCIX. Their effort to apply the firmware update to their inventory of FP241W's is awesome (and a very smart publicity opportunity). But, I believe that their value to us in the US is greater than that. I've added them to my list of vendors, and I expect that I'll be ordering from them again.

Per its web page, it looks like that monitor arm supports only "up to maximum load of 14 lb". I kept running into weight limits like this in investigating options. The FP241W without its stand weighs a hefty 22.4 lbs.

By the way, I had focused my research on freestanding stands (not arms or poles hard-attached to the desk). So, in this respect, my results may be incomplete.

Many of the retailers in the UK received new stock from Benq this week. I have contacted Ebuyer and Shiroi for some answers to whether they come with the 1:1 pixel mapping update, but to no avail . Has anybody been lucky and received an answer or already received their brand new FP241w?

thx

Got mine from Shiroi in the UK over the weekend, and I can confirm it has 1:1 mapping {december manufacturing date} , is silver/black, and is fantastic!

That's the first time that someone is reporting a dead pixel :( You can try this thingy to fix it, but chances are very low.

http://www.jscreenfix.com/#JScreenFix

I personally cannot tolerate dead/stuck pixels. I would suggest to return it and get replacement.

What issues does the new firmware fix other than the 1:1 issue? I've read through a number of pages, but I'm having a hard time finding the specifics.

I don't mean to be an asshole here, but that isn't true simply because technologically an lcd has no refresh rate that changing the option from 60 to 75 would actually change anything meaningful. If you perceive it to be better, then great, but the fact is that an lcd does not refresh the display using a scanline like a CRT, and that refresh rate is pretty much meaningless. When a pixel changes, the lcd just updates it as fast as the response time of the display device allows.

Edit: Behardware examined this issue when taking a look at some new 100hz displays Samsung was shopping around as of CeBit 2006, and they found much the same thing, unless the display claims higher refresh rate support in its marketing stuff, it is probably going to simply be internally clocked at 60hz and it will drop frames to keep clocked
http://www.behardware.com/articles/641-5/1rst-lcd-at-100-hz-the-end-of-afterglow.html

Yes.. when a pixel changes it updates it. That means if you're using a 60Hz connection, it will only update at most 60 times per second, and if you send on a 75Hz connection, it can update up to 75 times per second.

There's no reason why they wouldnt support 75 Hz internally. If people say they can see it, then I believe that over speculation. 60Hz is really slow afterall - I use 85Hz on my Trinitron.

Hi All,
I ordered from NCIX a couple weeks back and have gotten the monitor. Upon closer inspection it appears that I have a dead pixel on the left side of the display. But I am not sure if it is completely dead. Using a dead pixel test I found, it will only show up on a pure white screen or on my desktop background. EX, when watching movies, it is black when there are bars in the movie file. It seems to display black and blue well, any thoughts? I did buy the zero pixel warranty from NCIX, but I don't know if I want to hassle with it and send such a great display back for ONE bad pixel. Dam shame!
Anyway, to the poster(s) above, mine is a black bezel with a black stand.
Also to someone who wanted screenshots, take a look at my previous post a couple of pages back.

OK. The monitor I ordered on Saturday has now shipped about 5 hours ago via Purolator ground. I should be getting it soon then. :) Hopefully it won't have dead pixels.:(

You can try this.
-Remove the monitor from the arm.
-Unthighs the 4 screw of the mounting bracket.
-Try to twist the mounting bracket CW or CCW, maybe there is enough play to cure your problem.

Good luck.

Hi,

I have a really weird question for you, from what i remember the monitor has 3 usb port, 2 on the side and one on the top right?(if i'm wrong correct me)

Can you tell me which side the white(with the 4 golden line) part in the connector is mounted, in the front or the back?

I know it's seem weird, but it's because i'm currently "modding" my IR receiver of my remote for my computer to make it smaller and with a direct usb output, instead of a long cable. So for that i'd like to know which side the connector is oriented, to be sure my case will be on the right side ans not "aiming" at the wall hehe :p

White is at the back. GL ;)

thanks, everything is done!, only have to put everything in the case.. but now i'm thinking i wont make the final step till i have my monitor, just in case a new more interesting model comes out before i buy it...

I got this Monitor for Christmas and it is amazing! I sent it in for the Firmware Upgrade and got it back yesterday. I am having one problem though, DVI doesn't seem to work after firmware upgrade!!!!!

I have tried a different DVI cable with same result. I tried a DVI to VGA adapter and that also didn't work, so that tells me that it has something to do with my video card????

Seems weird to me that it worked before sending it back, and now doesn't work.

Can anyone confirm that if I use DVI to VGA adpater in back of my VID card and then plug into VGA... does this confirm the DVI socket in my vid card is blown????

Anything else I can do to try it? I am using an NVIDIA 6800GT with BETA drivers(I tried stable ones too but no different)

Other than that, the VGA to VGA works fine and component also works well. I haven't tried HDMI yet but I am assuming as others have said, it will work well.

I also want to make sure there isn't some option I have to turn on for either Video drivers or on the monitor to get DVI to work.

Thanks...

Mike

-ps- I am also having the issue with VGA from XBOX not being centered right, but I fixed that by changing the PIXEL size in monitor options screen and it displays 1080p properly.

FP241W:

One USB port in the top, in the center, but not flush with the top of the monitor. The top of the port is about 1/4" below the top of the monitor.

Two USB ports on the left side of the monitor, much closer to the bottom than the top. Recessed about 3/8" in from the side of the monitor.

For all three ports, the white tab that you refer to is actually black in color. The tab is to the front of the monitor. With respect to the monitor, the gold connectors on these tabs are of course "behind" the tab. So, any USB cable plugged into one of these ports will have its USB logo viewable from the front of the monitor.

I got a benq fp241w today, and there is a problem with the dvi input.

I cant get anything higher then 1280x1024, doesn't matter what i do, any higher then that and it says no signal input. I also get nothing on screen during the boot up process until windows has finished loading then the monitor finally detects something and turns on.

I went and bought a dvi to hdmi converter and it seems to have fixed most of the issues, except max resolution now is 1920 x 1080, which would be 1080p.

I plugged my xbox in the component to try that, and 1080p works perfectly.

If i plug my projector into my computer via dvi it works fine. I've even tried formatting just in case but it didn't help.

My benq manufacturing date is Nov 2006 and i haven't had the firmware update. From my google searching I've only managed to find a few cases and no work around so i assume its a faulty monitor unless someone comes up with a new idea ;p

Your not the only one with this problem, iv seen this posted several pages back, cant remember if they found a fix or not, you might wanna start checking this thread from when the update was offered (brokenanimator first guy?) to find the post im on about

Hello Folks,

I would like to ask for your help in trying to determine a problem I am having with my newly bought firmware upgraded FP241W.

My main problem is when I try to run the LCD in DVI/VGA mode (vga mode especially), I noticed a red hue/tint on black backgrounds which affects the color accuracy on black backgrounds. I notice this a lot when I am running a game such as the GRAW2 demo in my vga plugged xbox360 wherein the loading screen which should be a solid black, I instead get a red hue/tint over my black background. I plugged the same xbox360 to my other lcd (21" samsung 215tw LCD) and observed that the blacks are indeed blacks in this monitor.

I tried fiddling aroung with the RGB options within the monitor with no luck. I bought this LCD in my local NCIX store and have shown their technician my problem. He was very skeptical that my LCD had a display problems at first but after comparing the blacks on the other store LCD's and on another open box FP241W, he agreed on replacing my LCD with another new one.

Sigh, I brought the new one home and I still have the red tint there. Here lies a few questions I need to address:

1. Am I just that unlucky, Have any of you FP241W owners experienced a similar issue? Did I just get a bad batch maybe? (PS I already searched the thread to no avail)

2. Should I just go for the open box that I did confirm to not have this issue?

3. Should I just try for a third one and hope for the best or am I just insanely sensitive about this.

I apologize for the length of my post but I sincerely appreciate any comments or suggestions you have with my issue. Thanks

Hi Guys,

Here is my problem:

I got my monitor on Monday from Insight.com. Noticed two faults and contacted Insight today to get a replacement. Insight told me that I would have to contact BenQ as they handle replacements right from day 1 and that Insight would not be able to issue me with a replacement. Again, this would have to be done through BenQ even though I purchased the monitor from them two days ago.

After contacting BenQ I was instructed to take pictures of the faults, provide them with the exact location of the dead pixel and provide them with my invoice for 'proof of purchase'. What's more they wanted this proof of purchase in PDF format!

Here are the faults:

Monitor is tilted to the right and will not tilt to the left any further:
bqpic1.jpg

One dead pixel. This does not bother me too much though:
bqpic2.jpg

Don't get me wrong. This is a great monitor and I would highly recommend it but the trouble I have received so far from Insight and BenQ is unacceptable to say the least.

I am a UK buyer btw.

Um... Still no monitor... I got a call from Canadian Post asking if I had received my monitor, but all they had to do was check their stupid tracking system to know that it got shipped from Canada, to the US then back to Canada, and now it looks like it's coming back to the US...? Obviously they didn't make the 1/30 delivery date... I worry that all this shipping and handling, etc will damage my monitor more than normal (since it's been in transit for like 2-3 weeks)...

Service Standard Delivery Date: 2007/01/30

2007/02/06 11:20 International shipment has arrived in the destination country
2007/02/05 20:30 International item has left Canada and is en route to destination
2007/02/01 03:36 International shipment has arrived in Canada
2007/01/29 14:41 International shipment has left the origin country and is en route to Canada
2007/01/25 10:44 International shipment has arrived in the destination country
2007/01/24 09:06 International item has left Canada and is en route to destination
2007/01/24 01:11 RICHMOND, BC Item accepted and entered into sortation plant
2007/01/23 08:50 VANCOUVER, BC Shipping details electronically submitted

Also I'm starting to worry about this DVI issue that people are reporting... Has anybody gotten an already updated monitor from NCIX, and had issues with DVI and full resolution?

Do you have an ATI video card? I had problems displaying above 1680x1050 on a Radeon Mobility 9700 until I unchecked the "Reduce DVI frequency on high-resolution displays" and "Alternate DVI operational mode".

i think i'm going to call them and see if i can get them to test my monitor and confirm the DVI works before they ship it out, this is concerning when one spends this much coin on an item only to have it come back messed up like that. :(

With those kind of faults I wouldn't say that :(

in terms of powering this monitor for games, is it realistic to expect I will be able to run modern games (like battlefield 2142) at full 1920x1200 res in high detail but with FSAA & AF etc switched off or to the minimum on the following set up

256mb 7900 gt
athlon 64 3700
2gb pc3200 ddr ram

the only charts i can find for this setup is here which suggests it is

Did you import the monitor from the US? Did you have to pay import duty (14%) & VAT on top of the website price?

No it was purchased at Insight UK (not their US site).

BenQ Emailed me back to say my invoice wasnt good enough. They wanted the print out invoice to be sent to them as the Email invoice wasnt good enough. I mean what the fu*k? I have given them the serial number to begin with! What more do they want?
