I am leaning towards an E6300 due to cost, but I will want to hit at least 3GHz with OCZ DDR2-800 ram. I assume I will be doing straight FSB overclocking to get to that point. I am considering a Gigabyte DS3, but the cold boot issues are scaring me off. Anyone have any better alternatives?

Will the 6300 hold me back more than a 6400 by any signifigant margin? My cooling is a zalman 7700cu. Does the 8x multi make that much of a difference over the 7x on the 6300?

Also, where has the best prices on the 6300s?

Thanks.

Oh and FYI just about everything in my sig will be in a FS thread soon.

maybe,

E6300
cpu max multi of 7 x 400FSB = 2.8GHz with no overclock on your memory.
cpu max multi of 7 x 428FSB = 3.0GHz memory overclocked 56MHz which it should do.

E6400
cpu max mulit of 8 x 375 = 3.0 GHz memory UNDERclocked, no sweat
cpu max multi of 8 x 400 = 3.2 GHz with no over clock on you memory.

the E6400 will be more forgiving and put less stress on the motherboard and memory and give you more headroom for maximum overclocking. The E6300 will do it, the E6400 will be so easy a caveman could do it. Well worth the $40 in cursing and time spent tweaking.

Yeah for the price difference you should just get the e6400. If you get the e6300 you will be doing more tuning with the memory timings to get the fsb to clock higher. With the e6400 FSB is all you need to change, for the most part. the E6400 is worth the extra 40 and it will save you a headache.

Well then if I got the E6400 could I save money and get PC6400 Ram? Would that let me reach 3GHz with the 8x multi?

Any suggestions on such ram?

DDR2-800 is PC2-6400. You will be able to get to 3.2GHz easily, almost guaranteed, as the above posters stated.

Sorry...i meant ddr667....I wasn't expecting to need to upgrade so soon so I am out of the loop here.

but not guaranteed :)

My e6400 I cannot get to be stable over 3ghz with decent voltages (stock - 1.4ish range)

Thats why I run @x7 multi to get 2.8GHZ and still have 400FSB
