My brother has an HP Computer and I want to reformat it. Would it be possible to get the key from his pc (xp home) and use it to reformat using my xp pro upgrade cd?

The key for XP Home will not work for XP Pro. If his license if your XP Home, you'll need an XP Home OEM CD. If you don't have one, HP should send you one for the cost of shipping.

The PID keys are tied to the version of XP you have....you can reformat and use his OEM disk or buy an upgrade XP Pro and do a reinstall, but Microsoft isn't about to make a free upgrade available from Home to Pro ;)

You might download an uncracked home .iso, if you need to. That's perfectly legal.

His CDKey should be on a sticker on the side of the case, you just need a XP HOme OEM CD to install with

No that is questionable.

Anyway HP should have the cds for you to order for it. Depending on the model it may have a restore set or a xp disk and then a app recovery set. You can also try to get some place like compusa to make you a copy of the hp xp home disk as they have them. If you can't get them for some reason an oem copy of xp home should work fine. If for some reason you can't find anything I can prob dig one up for you.

HP has recovery discs that includes the OEM XP CD. They're yours for $12 shipped if you're still under warranty.
