Notice this while looking at something else. Apple has their refurbished 30GB White iPod Videos on sale for $179 with free shipping.

For those of you who have never seen an Apple Refurb they are in perfect condition. I bought my daughter a Refurb Shuffle and it looked as if it had just come off the line.

From the Apple site:

Apple Certified Refurbished Products

- Quality products/great prices
- Stringent refurbishment process prior to sale
- Covered by Apple's One-Year Limited Warranty
- AppleCare Protection Plan can be purchased
- Supplies are limited

My refurb had a dead pixel. I don't know if that matters to anyone but I thought I'd mention it.

You could have taken it to an Apple store for an exchange.

These refurbs are just the 5th generation (not 5.5). You'll lose out on the brighter screen and search feature.

It is a decent deal. The link in the OP is broken, this will take you to the page that they are on just scroll down

They also have black as well!
Thanks, I fixed the link.

I thought they added the search feature in a firmware update for the 5th Gens.

Not to mention longer battery life. You can play them for hours, too—thanks to the improved battery life on the new 30GB and 80GB iPod models. Listen to music for up to 14 hours on the former; up to 20 hours on the latter. Watch movies for up to 3.5 hours on the former; up to 6.5 hours on the latter.

Of course, battery life based on video playback is using the 5.5's ability to change the brightness via software. The original 5Gs don't have this, right?

Is 5.5 what came out this fall? I'm not currently in the market, but if that's the case, then Gen 5 does gapless (via firmware update), which makes this a great deal for those that listen to concerts, Pink Floyd, Rush, Beatles, Techno Mixes, Opera or Classical music.

I'm guessing this is 50-70 bucks off of a new one...not a ton, but cheaper is cheaper. I guess the screen would matter more if you care a lot about videos.

haha I always hated those figures. I could load up a playlist and have my ipod 5g die after 6-7 hours. 14 hours my ass.

All of those figures vary based on how loud you listen, what the bitrate of the files is and if you use the EQ or not. My guess is apple uses 128kbs AAC files played at level 9 or 10 out of 30 into earbuds with no EQ and minimal playing with the controls. Every company tends to overstate these figures.....but I must admit that 6 or 7 hours is pretty bad. I get 10 or so on my Rio Karma and I play it loud, with the eq and generally using 160 or 192kbs vorbis files (which apparently eat more battery than MP3 and WMA). Then again, I rarely listen to my player more than a few hours at a time.....but longer would be good if you fly to europe :)

The older models have the same battery life (after the newest firmware upgrade), but a dimmer screen. You can still adjust the brightness on them though.

Thanks for clearing that up. I was thinking about getting one of these refurbs.

I recently changed my 5g ipod's battery and when I was buying, it stated that 5.5g both 30gb and 80gb used a different battery than 5g and not to order it for the 5g 30gb since it won't fit. And indeed the 5.5g version was higher mah

Yeah or you could get a WORKING NEW toshiba gigabeat S30 for 197 (free shipping too i think)

http://www.6ave.com/product.jsp?zipz=11001&x=MES30VW&w=1 shipping is 6 cents!

no reason to get a refurb if you can swing the extra 18 bucks....I've read apple's documentation and there is no assurance that the HDD has been changed in these units (which means you could be buying a timebomb, used HDD's are not something I'd want to risk paying for)

still a decent deal, it would be nice if you could be sure you were getting one with a new HDD

Why should it matter? I've never heard of any major complaints with Apple's refurbs. If it happens to fail when its still under warranty, you can have the product exchanged.

The only thing you're losing out on is the retail packaging.

Personally I don't think it matters if the HD is new or not. you get a one year warranty. If the drive lasts a year, it'll probably last more than 3 years. I doubt the likelyhood of a break after the first year is any more likely with a refurb than a new model.

As for the toshiba, does it have gapless playback? My mantra is no gapless means no sale. Apple is finally on the gapless bandwagon (and it's about time).

cool, I was thinking of buying one to hook up to my '86 Mustangs cassette deck, instead of ripping open the dash, and instead of having a CD changer take up much more space,

did they run out of 30 gig video? i dont see them on there anymore? if they did, when will they have them back?

probably these sell pretty good...

I mean its in a shiny new case and 1yr warranty... basically a brand new ipod if you think of it

These come around fairly often and go OOS very quickly. Keep your eye on the page.

wow that's as good as the real thing. definitely a good deal. i've gone through tons of ipods, and each time through refurb, it'd be like new.

that statement alone is enough for me to hug my 20 dollar sandisk 512 meg mp3/radio/audio recorder.

I thought $179 was the standard price for a refurbed iPod? If so, how is MSRP considered hot?

Because it is quite a bit cheaper than the $249 you would pay new. Keep in mind that the "refurb" iPods look and perform just like their new box counterparts and they carry the same 1 year warranty so if it dies Apple will take care of you. While this may or may not be the MSRP for the refurb iPod (I have seen them higher) they never stay in stock for very long so when they are it is hot. Similar to the fact that the MSRP for the Woot Random Bag of Crap is a dollar but is still considered a blazing hot deal whenever they are back in stock.
