Got my Westinghouse LVM-37W3 37" 1080p display today!

Pixel pitch on the LVM-37w3 is 0.4266, the 42" is 0.4843

I was thinking of building an HTPC but since all I really want is watch movies and TV, I think instead of building an HTPC I'll just buy an OPPO DV-981HD 1080p Up-Converting DVD Player and a nice surround sound speaker set together with this monitor. My dish network receiver is already a PVR so I don't really need an HTPC. Which brings me to my question:

From what I've read I think the answer is yes, but just to make sure:

Questions, please read:

Can I connect this monitor directly to the OPPO DV-981HD DVD Player by HDMI and to my Dish Network set-top box by S-Video without the need of a PC and use it as a TV? And will it look as good as an LCD HDTV? Thanks.

PS. How does this model compare to the 42 incher? All the specs are the same, but I can't find what's their pixel pitch. Since they have the same native resolution at difference sizes, is the pixel pitch on the 42" too big? Mwave has the 42 incher for just $200 more. I'm thinking about going with the 42" since it's just $200 more, but if the 37" looks better (smoother) cuz of the pixel pitch then I would prefer the 37".

I just blurted out what I envisioned to be an uber setup, for the most rediculous usage purpose. Just think, a $3k setup in screens alone, $1.2k for video cards, $1k for CPU, $1k for RAM, $1k for disks, etc, etc. All to play a 25 year old system through a sub $100 tv tuner through coax...I LOVE IT!

oh i know...im just giving you some shit...that would be a tad mental for sure

Thank you very much! I couldn't find that info anywhere. Do you think the difference is noticeable?

Without taking money into consideration, which one would you get? Westy 37" or 42"?

I just set up this monitor for the first time and I think I have a similar issue. The picture is shifted about half a centimeter to the left, and I am not sure how to correct it. Is this something I need to do with the video card? I don't have the ATI Catalyst control panel installed. I just have the ATI driver.

Hi, can someone tell me if I am risking damage to my monitor?

In order to get my PC centered properly on DVI2, I unselected the ATI Catalyst option "Reduce DVI frequency on high-resolution displays". That would imply it is no longer reducing the refresh rate, right? Could this mean it is too high and possibly damage my LCD? Thanks.

Thanks for the tip. When I switched to the DVI-1 port, the alignment problem was fixed. I have no idea what is up with DVI-2.

Yo, when I use DVI-2, the PC desktop is shifted a few lines to the left, but when I use DVI-1, it's centered properly. What's up with that?

Well, here is my lucky tale/tail. This morning, around 7-ish Central Time, I lucked out somewhat amazingly. I was checking out Crutchfield's website and... well... the W3 showed up as in stock!! It said "Low in Stock," but at least it was there. I didn't think twice: I just ordered it. Sure enough, a minute later it showed as "Not in Stock." I believe I got the last one. Who knows for how long it had been there and how many they'd had.

After a quick checkout and a few minutes on the phone with their kind sales reps, I finalized the order. They shipped it six hours after I bought it and it will be here Monday at the latest. These guys are pros.

Total came to $1199 with free shipping and free White Glove delivery (in-home installation). I couldn't take advantage of the no payment till 2009 thing as I had to pay with an international credit card (I'm an exchange college student in the US)....... but it's still a freakin' good DEAL!! :D

So, yeah, I've joined the club. Hehehe. :D

Damn, I've been watching that thing like a hawk for weeks. Congrats on snagging one.

I'd grab the 37w3, honestly. It's cheaper than the 42", duh. Heh, all joking aside, I've not seen the 1080p 42", so I really cannot comment on the visibility of the pixel pitch on that one. I will say the 37 is damn sweet, for the $. For the record, I used this to calculate pixel pitch.

Thank you very much! I couldn't find that info anywhere. Do you think the difference is noticeable?

Hey, has anyone got the Xbox 360 Universal Media Remote to work on this monitor? I saw the code for Westinghouse is 0486, but it doesn't work.

The steps I am doing are...
Holding OK and TV simultaneously for 2 s
Entering 0486
Pressing TV to finish code entry
Pressing TV to get remote back on track
Pressing TV to get into TV mode

Or
Holding OK and TV simultaneously for 2 s
Pressing Ch/Pg +/- and waiting for it to turn off (never does)

I have ordered a 42" and a 37" from Newegg. All have been perfect. On a side note, has anyone been gaming at full screen and when the exit the game their screen goes black and the only way to get it back is to reboot? It does not happen if I run a game in window mode. I know the pc is still running because I can see things going on in my G15.

Bump...any thoughts?

I would say uninstall video drivers, then boot to safe mode, run DriverCleaner, then back into Windows (normal mode), and re-install video drivers. Also, check your system logs for even errors specifically related to your card drivers.

Anyone know where I can get some REALLY good hi res wallpapers/backgrounds for this resolution, or 1920x1200, either work fine...

Girls, cars, bikes, scenery... Mostly girls... I love to change my background all the time, and finding one that is filling and looks good is hard to do, mainly right now just using small papers, and blacking the rest of it out...

Some really good scenery ones there.

Well, i just read through every page of this thread and i have to say the Westy looks wicked, im about to RMA a BenQ FP241W for what seems to be an isolated issue and i was actually thinking of switching and getting the Westy now.
My only question though is, after using a 24" and being used to the compact super sharp picture how is this gonna compare?
I know lots of people said in this thread say the pictures sharp as hell but i was hoping someone who hd used a 24" before or at least close to it could say from experience.
I just figured the Westy is 13" bigger but almost the same resolution as the 24" BenQ so how does the size difference translate?
Sorry if i missed my answer here in the thread but im braindead from all the reading.
Thanks.

I've used a Dell 24" and my Westy will be here soon... hopefully before the weekend, but I'm not getting my hopes toooooo high. Will let you know the difference whenever it's here. Technically, though, as long as you sit farther from such a larger screen (say, 4-5 feet, reasonably) it shouldn't look different at all.

How about at Arms Length? (Going from a 17" LCD to 37" Westy..)

i got mine yesterday, i sit about 1.5-3feet away for computer use and it is AWESOME. Even at that distance i cant really see the pixels so no screen door effect and at the about 1.5-2ft it almost covers my entire field of view and just makes using the computer and playing games just that much more immersive. I'll post some pics after when i get my camera back from the gf. Gonna go calibrate it with an eye-one now.

Edit: Ok, my windows is messing up on me and not allowing my eye-one to finish. Can anyone post their settings using some sort of hardware calibration?

hmmm..wont have my new Maingear until the end of the month - ish... should i wait a fw weeeks..or go for it now?

if u can find it at a good price i'd get it now before the sale for it ends and also in case it sells out.

I made my mind up, My BenQ FP2041W starts its RMA journey back to New Egg in the morning. I spoke with one of their support staff for a few minutes and and voila!, a full refund is to be issued as soon as they receive the unit, at which point i will promptly slap down the cash on the Westy. All your guys ravings about it plus some pretty sweet pics has me sold!
I game all the time on my rig so i think this will be the icing on the cake for me.
I appreciate all the hard work you chaps did in helping those of us who were shopping for a monitor decide. :)

It looks like a bad cable...Swapped it out and all is well.

I'd be interested in reading your opinion when you get it. I'm on the fence about getting the Dell 24" (versus the much cheaper 22"). I'd like to get something bigger, but the price is high enough that I'm considering other larger monitors. What kind of a desk do you have that is 4-5 feet deep? That does seem like a better distance, but the desk must be huge!?!?

I don't understand how these people that sit 1-2 feet away from the monitor are not suffering eye or neck strain. Don't you have to turn your head to see from edge-to-edge sitting that close?

Well IMO seeing that I don't have this monitor just yet 1 foot is extreme and two feet is pushing it. I would probably be around two and half feet away. I can't wait to have such a huge screen so I can stop hunching over to read my laptop screen.

i had a Samsung 244T before getting my westy, i sit between 2-3ft and no strain at all, i just move my eyeballs instead of head :p This screen is awesome compared to the 244t tho and I love it. Need to order some cables from monoprice now since it doesnt come with any at all. Not a big thing for me since the price was good and i'd rather buy better cables than what they probably would have included anyway.

lol I ordered my cables ten minutes after I ordered the Westy... now they're here and the Westy isn't, so I'll just stare at the cables longingly for a few days :p

I had the same problem with programming a universal remote, I used the second method you listed , I had to hold down the button for over 3 mins lol, I guess it just cycles through combinations of numbers until it finds the right one.

I already was able to file my tax return electronically the other day and when my refund comes in I will buy the 42" Westinghouse. I have been wanting a nice big pc monitor that I could watch all my movies and HD TV shows on.

after talking to Westinghouse over the phone, a few days ago, it seems that they shipped a bunch in prep for Christmas rush, and those sold out. Now, over the last few weeks, and many areas of the country being hit with inclimate weather, they are having trouble keeping them in stock, especially since this is such a "best kept secret" in the Westinghouse line. I love this thing!

...trying to buy this monitor.

ChurchfieldCanada says it's been discontinued.
BestBuy (the only "official" reseller) says they don't have it, and won't.

So basically if I want it, I'll have to order it from over the border. Which would make shipping and returns (if necessary) unpleasant.

Nasty.

They are discontinued and the new models are listed in CES 2007 press releases

Otherwise, all of the displays at the booth were LCDs, showing off Westinghouse as one of the very few companies that has always been devoted to only one of the two formats of HD displays. The most impressive consumer model they were showing off is the TX-52F480S, a 1080p TV with a whopping four HDMI inputs, and two sets of composite/component inputs. It is scheduled for a May 2007 release. Pricing was been available.

Rounding out the first set of new 1080p models will be the TX-42F430S, a 42" model with 4 HDMI and 2 component/composite with a $2000 MSRP, and the TX-47F430S, a 47" display with the same inputs and a $2500 retail price. Both will be available in April.

Noteworthy is also a Westinghouse 24" widescreen PC monitor with a 1920 x 1200 resolution. When hooked up to a PS3, the image clarity was just as clear as when it is viewed on a large-screen 1080p TV. The model number is L2410NM and it will be available later this month for about $700.

discontinued! NOT discontinued! discontinued! NOT discontinued!

wtf?

reminds me of wmd, no wmd, wmd,....

Several sites show as having them in stock atm...mwave, pcnation ( ? )Computer HQ, buydig.com....but alot of those retailers seema little sketchy

newegg says 1/14 expected some..

I wish we could just get a damn honest answer =/

The issue of this model being discontinued is correct to some degree. Although Westinghouse will probably continue making these for a couple more months, as of March 1, 2007 all TV's regardless of size will have to be made with at least the ATSC tuner that is widely available to most TV's today. Now companies may be trying to get around this by saying "its not a tv its a monitor" and that could work for awhile I guess, but in the end the 37w3 will have to be changed to include a tuner.:D

Hm..what was the LVM-37W3 priced at when it was first introduced, and is it likely that the W4 (if made) would be a similar price?
