Got my Westinghouse LVM-37W3 37" 1080p display today!

ordered this last week, and should arrive early this week, it doesnt come with any cables other then power cord, correct? does it support DVI dual link? or should i just get DVI single link? or does it not make a difference?

i have a 7800GTX and i do believe that is dual link capable.

no you dont need dual dvi since the resolution is 1920/1080 pretty much any decent video card can run it.
 
Input lag test:

Westy LVM-37w3 vs. HP mx70 CRT

GFX Card: BFG 6800GT, Westy LCD connected via DVI, HP CRT connected via VGA. Driver set to clone mode with both refreshing at 60hz.

Westy shows 30ms lag behind the CRT. Not too bad.

I've had my tv for almost a month now, and am really noticing ghosting... like REALLY bad... Some people might not see it but I see it, and its pretty annoying!!!

I was wondering if anyone else is having this... When I play battlefield or watch some fast paced movies, it is really bad, slower paced things its not as bad but still noticeable slightly!

This really sucks, as I love this tv, but this is so annoying...

There is known issues with 1080i movie content deinterlacing to 1080p with some ghosting issues. Just watch them at 720p it solves the issue. Until 1080p content becomes more prevelent this is something we will have to live with. It is not a problem with the LCD being "too slow" because 1080p content is just fine. It is definately an issue with 1080i deinterlacing.

I have never had any problems with ghosting in PC Games etc though. The only problem I have had with some games is tearing and enabling vertical sync in those games solves the problem (nothing new to LCD monitors there though)
 
I'm sorry if I made it out to seem that I watch movies in 1080i/p... lol, I have an output of 1080 i from my cable but its not really the problem, I mean, it does it, but so does everything else... Even my mouse cursor at times lol... Course its harder to see but sometimes...

Games are real bad about it, and so are fast paced movies as I've already stated...

I've noticed some significant "motion blur", never any ghosting, though the monitor definitely shows ghosting in several tests.

Overall I'm very happy with the Westy, I really want to start a dedicated site just for those of us using the Westy as our PC monitor.

Yeah, I guess you could call it a blur, but its real bad for some reason... I mean, seriously, I think of it as ghosting, a heavier blur... I know all LCD's have some type of blur, but geez ;P... I mean I love my westy, just dont love this part of it...

JOHNIEMVP or whatever, where'd you get that desk from, and bout how much it cost... I'm looking for a desk much like that one :)

wow...what to do now...

I ordered a Maingear F131, will get it in a couple weeks..and also had the money put aside for a monitor..was going to get the dell 24" 2407, which they were @$719, now down to $694...BUT

Seeing as 99% of everyone that's posting here on this thread that has one of these monsters is pleased... If I hold out a few days or til the end of the month.. maybe I should just spend a little more and get this bad boy!

My primary usage would be PC on a DVI connect from the 8800gtx. Alot of forum and internet reading ( political, conspiracy etc.. :p ) and the game I still play ALOT..is Everquest 1... yea..it's old now..but still alive and kicking, and I have a top 20 character in a hard core raiding guild so it's hard to walk away from it..may check out Vanguard once released

Once again, you folks don't find this too pixelated? I wouldn't have to sit several feet away to avoid that, would I? And a few are now saying they DO seem to have ghosting in games..any one else?

I think the WESTY is really popularizing a sweet desk from IKEA - Jerker.

I bought this desk after recommendation from a fellow gaming friend. After he showed me pictures of his setup, I went out and immediately bought it. It's been almost 2 years now.

When I purchased the WESTY, I had NO DOUBT that the screen would fit, and was very happy that I made a smart choice for a desk.

I could do much better in cleaning up my setup, as many people in this thread of shown some VERY clean/neat setups. I'm being inspired to eliminate clutter and get my gear in order.

I have too much junk everywhere. I should learn something from my fellow Hardforum members :)

Your time difference is 0.33 - 0.30 = 0.03 (3E-2) which is 30 ms, not 3 ms. Still good for an LCD compared to other monitors such as Samsung 244T.
 
Be aware that the above photo represents Input Delay + Response time. So the input delay is approximately 30 ms - 8 ms (response time) = 22 ms (approx).
 
yep, all LCDs exhibit some input lag, 22ms seems about average or actually pretty good so shouldnt be a problem, the human mind can "feel" input lag around 45-50ms and higher and thats why i really hated playing FPS games on my 244T that had anywhere between 40-65ms. Those who are really sensitive might be able to feel it from 40ms so 22ms still seems like nothing.
 
best shipped price atm is about 1140...

but talked with the wife, seems not much more than I had budgeted anyway... why settle for 24" if this MONSTER isnt that much more... looks really like a mind blower!
 
yep, and most 24" LCDs out atm are mediocre at best, not sure why no one has brought out a 24" that really blows the smaller sizes away, so far they only release ones that each have their own problems.

I know this is a bit of a subjective question... but how do people who have done similar type of things with their displays... who have had both this Westy 37" as well as any of the various 24" LCDs feel it compares?

Obviously, 1920x1200 on 24" is a much higher pixel density than 1920x1080 on 37"... yet 37" is quite a bit bigger, for maybe a home theater. But, how about things like how good game units (even older 480i/p units) look over component... ghosting... colors, etc?

I'm trying to decided between the Westy and maybe a BenQ 24" I'd prefer a bit bigger than 24", though the 37" is pushing it. I like the more inputs on the Westy... and that it is so close in price makes the decision tough. I'd love a 27" or 32", but nothing in my price range. I'm going to wait after CES... maybe even as long as mid-February... but I ultimately think it will come down to this Westy 37" and the BenQ 24".

Just wondering how people feel it compares apart from size and pixel density. I'll be primarily using it for a TV replacement, with 90% of my content coming from a HTPC... and sitting maybe 6' away.
 
I posted this in another thread but didnt get any responses. I'll post it again here as most of the people in this thread either have this monitor or plan to purchase it soon.

I am pretty much set on buying the 37" Westinghouse as well to replace my Dell 2407. I plan on hooking up my digital cable box to it via HDMI, pci via DVI and xbox 360 via VGA. I have a very large desk so I can put the Westinghouse atleast 3 feet back to get a good viewing distance. Is there anything else that I should be aware of......and is that a good setup of my components?
 
Thats a good setup for the monitor and exactly why I bought the Westy. I needed inputs for all my consoles and no monitor has that many inputs. Plus monitors tend to have bad component inputs.
 
John what kind of desk is that you have, and where can you get it... How much also... Thats the kinda desk I'm looking for, as I use it for both TV, and gaming with pc, would like to have it set up very nice like where I can pull the tv out some for viewing, and push it back for gaming... ??

I fixed my post with the bad math, not the input lag ;)

About input lag and gaming: I know in quake3 there is a command called timenudge, maybe it could help to compensate somewhat for input lag. Anyone more familiar with the q3's inner workings? Any other games with similar commands?
 
What would be the best to connect this to a 360, if that is ALL I'm using it for? Component, until HDMI is available?
 
Think my Westy is fried, I was using a liveCD for Gentoo (linux distro) and I think it forced a refresh rate that the Westy didn't like, couldn't have been on for more than a few minutes but the picture won't come on and when I try to bring up the menu the menu freezes, waiting on an RMA from Westy since the TV is not even 2 months old yet.

Gotta say, while it could just be a coincidence, if the higher refresh rate fried the TV after only a few minutes, I'd say anyone using this monitor as their PC monitor should DEFINITELY buy the replacement plan, it's not uncommon for something unknowingly force a refresh rate now and again.

I'm back using my 21" Sony Trinitron CRT, gotta say the Westy kicks ass! After using my Westy for almost 2 months going back to this thing is horrible. :(

Aside from some very minor gripes with the Westy, it really is superior to my CRT in many many ways, I can never go back to such a small screen.
 
Well I must say you are lucky to be getting a replacement considering it was your fault. You know the refresh rate and you went beyond that.

I am running mine at 70 right now been that way for a week now. Gonna change it back to 60 since there is no difference. I was just messing around with an app for my Mini.

Nothing is going to force a different refresh rate every now and again. The chances of that happening are slim to none. If I am wrong please provide me with data that says otherwise.

I will be powering my Westy with a 8800gtx. Dual link is just more pins than single..correct? Even if the Westy doesn't require it, would Dual provide a cleaner or stronger signal..or is it irrelevant?

I need to order a cable anyway... just wondering what is the best way to go? Does it make any difference at all? And I would assume that I should look for the most shielded cable avail...?
 
I don't think the extra pins will help you at all. At 1920x1080 the 8800 won't even be sending out a dual link signal so it won't make a difference. With that said I have a dual link cable, but only because it was cheap.

What is important is that it is DVI-D. Or, pure digital as the Westy does't accept analog over DVI and thus has a different pin-in.

The best place, as far as I am concerned. Here's a page with your name all over it. These cables are HUGE, and top notch. Cheap too, but not in quality.

The LVM-37w3 doesn't use the dual link spec, since the resolution is not high enough. However, those cables above are dual link capable. IIRC, dual link is required for resolutions over [email protected] don't quote me. I know the Dell 30", and Apple Cinema Displays require dual link, because they run this resolution. The cables mentioned above mate perfectly with any DVI-D capable card/source, and this screen. It's what I'm running, and I couldn't be happier.

Edit: This from the n00bie FAQ posted ^^^ up there, guess I was wrong on the DVI-D spec:

A single link cable could support standard HDTV (1920x1080)! Dual link can support QXGA (2048x1536) without any problems.
