Researchers have built a computer that can tackle a fundamental challenge of cracking present-day encryption schemes: factoring large numbers.

The computer uses laser pulses to carry out Shor’s algorithm on each atom, to correctly factor the number 15. The system is designed in such a way that more atoms and lasers can be added to build a bigger and faster quantum computer, able to factor much larger numbers. The results, they say, represent the first scalable implementation of Shor’s algorithm.

The end of current algorithms, yes, encryption? No. Frankly massively powerful GPU compute is already enough to break most classical encryption so this isn't as disruptive as the author of this article thinks.

Like Quix said, this is just the end of standard encryption. As dgz said, quantum encryption is the solution. In fact, quantum encryption even allows an authorized user to determine if a break in attempt or eavesdropping attempt was made, because an attempt to read the data in a quantum encrypted state changes the state of the quantum elements.
