www.look-up-search.com search engine on my comp!

If I just type something like hardforum into my IE 7 bar (same thing happens in IE 6 and Firefox), I get results from a site that looks like Google, but is called http://www2.look-up-results.com/ . At the bottom of the page, if you click "about" it says that I have to accept a cookie to opt out of the service. The cookie is said to be from www.turnonsearch.com . What the hell is this? Is there something that I am doing to get this service? How do I block it without accepting the cookie (don't want obvious weird crap on my comp)? I tried to disable the browser addons in IE 7 but, that didn't work. There was one called research that I had no clue what it was but disabling it didn't fix the problem. Here is what I get when I visit www.turnonsearch.com:

Does anyone think that this might be from my ISP- www.Intergate.com? It's a dialup ISP, but I had this same problem on my other computer also. I'm wondering if it has something to do with them... I have google set as my default search, but after 1 search it reverts back to www.look-up-results.com unless I accept the cookie. My whole internet web browsing sessions consist of hardocp, anandtech, msn/foxsports, cdfreaks, and gamespot. I don't think that one of them would do it; has anyone had any problems like mine? Any amount of help will be greatly appreciated.

It's called spyware.

Download Spybot, Ad-aware, Webroot Spysweeper demo, and possibly Microsoft Anti-Spyware. Update all of their definitions. Reboot into Safe Mode. Run them all, using full system scans when available.

Running an anti-virus scan wouldn't hurt either.

I ran Symantec 10 w/options to remove spyware.... found nothing....
Ran MS Antispyware full scan... found nothing...
Ran Spybot 1.4... found 25 cookies

NO MORE LOOK-UP-SEARCH
Tried 10 searches- only Google Search utilized!

What I've found better then Symantec Anti-Virus Corporate v. 10 is Anti-Vir, and it's %100 free! Definately check that stuff out and you shouldn't have much of these problems later on. Frequently scanning with Spybot S&D for sure won't hurt either.

another good antivirus is AVG Free. I like it. I should try out Anti-Vir though. Looking at it now. OP may also consider running a firewall like sygate or zone alarm. glad to see you got it figured out..i think maybe ill go off and look at my system for those nasty pieces of crap.

This 404/500 error redirection to www2.look-up-results.com or www.turnonsearch.com is not due to adware or spyware or cookies. It has been implemented by Choice One Communications into their national dial-up POP network, which many virtual ISPs such as Intergate and All2Easy.net use to provide local access numbers throughout the US.

Basically, Choice One is redirecting 404/500 "domain name not found" errors to this ad-supported web site and, in so doing, preventing a client's browser from displaying a standard browser-based, ad-free error message. I believe this practice violates the World Wide Web Consortium's HTTP/1.1 standards. Additionally, of course, user permission for the redirection has not been obtained. Look-up-results.com doesn't have a privacy policy, doesn't provide any contact information and their domain was registered privately using Go Daddy's proxy service.

Complain loudly about this abusive practice to your ISP in the hope that pressure will be brought to bear on Choice One to discontinue their permission-less redirection.
