Tyan Tiger K8W (s2875) CPU temps??
OK, I have just built my dream dual opteron 246 system from scratch and I'm running XP SP1.
Here is my problem. The CPU temperatures are registering at 65C and 68C on idle, and 68C and 71C at load . OK , thats all well and good, but the base of the cooling fin assembly at the CPU measures (with an accurate temp guage device - digital probe) approx 38-40C ?? At start, I'll go directly to the BIOS and register (within ten seconds) a CPU temp of 57-59C. Ambient temp in the room is around 24-26C. Temperatures indicated using the Tyan motherboard monitoring utility (yes I'm also have inconsistent success logging in as localhost) and Speedfan, and also the reading through the BIOS consistently register these insanely? high temperatures. The system is very stable under load, I might add also. I am using the factory Opteron heatsink assembly, but not only do I have 2 x 12cm stealth fans as well as 2 x 8cm fans on my 550w power supply, I have opened the case and pointed a 30cm desk fan on high directly at the CPU's, but only noticed a 1-2 degree drop in temp. I have also removed the manufacturers thermal pad and used Arctic silver paste exactly as recommended. I have contacted Tyan and had a very half arsed response telling me that they are right and I am wrong and thats it! Not really that satisfactory for a dude thats spent (in OZ - poor exchange rate) the equivalent of $10,000 US dollars putting this system together. I have tested the system under the last three BIOS updates (2.01, 2.02 & 2.03) and achieved no success with the temperatures. This does seems to be a real problem with the board looking at the posts on other hardware forums. So is it incorrect reading or hot CPU's? ![]()

It does seem that the temp reading is off. Ive got my dual box in a 4u case wiht 1 120mm fan up frount and 2 80mm's in the rear (all high cfm). Useing the retail amd hsf i'm reading 44C on cpu1 and 41C on cpu2 wiht an ambiant case temp of 36C
Another thing to keep in mind is you wont get true temp measurements from the HSF. If you are really worried about it you can get external temp sensors which can be placed near the core of the cpu and read out to a display in an external drive bay.

Thanks for that, Ive got Tyan back on the case now, and they seem to be willing to work through it with me. So if I get any success I'll be posting my results.
Meanwhile, if anyone else wants to post their temps, I'd be really appreciative.... ![]()

This is really killing me, I have just received my replacement board from Tyan, I 've re-assembled it with scientific accuracy (like a leading surgeon doing brain surgery in a sterile room) and I'm still getting mid to high 60 degrees (celcius) I now have two 120mm fans exhaust and two 120mm fans intake with two 80mm fans on the cpu's. I've tied every wire possible up to maximise airflow.
I've also test run the system with the bare essentials (one HDD and no cards) and still no improvement. What on earth am I doing wrong? Somebody please help me!! Did you update to the latest BIOS by any chance? I had the same issue with my 2875 and the latest BIOS update fixed it for me.
**edit** Here is the changelog. It doesn't mention fixing temp. readings but it's worth a shot. TYAN Tiger K8W (S2875) V2.04 New features and Fixes : * Added PXE support for i82451GI/EI chips * Changed ECC Chip Kill default to enabled by * default * Fixed 3ware card failed boot issue when * 16 SATA HD's were used * Fixed an issue where PME# could not be * disabled following a "resume on PME#" change * from enabled to disabled (or visa versa) * Added CO + CG mixed CPU support Last edited by webkido13; 11-10-2004 at 02:52 PM..

Thanks, I'll give it a go. I wasn't aware that v2.04 was out.

OK folks, here it is! End of the Road for me and my Tyan s2875...
Official (and Final) response from Tyan Tech Support. Quote:/ "Actually the last tech support person that talked to you was me and that was not the answer that I gave you in regards to your issue. This is what we stated: “Those values are not something that you could hand adjust. Those are all automated based on the products that you use. If it is all possible you should try an ATX12v source just to see if the CPU temps are different. At this point I'm not able to think of anything else other than what I have already stated that could cause such an issue.” A power supply could be a cause of the higher voltage and that is why we suggested this. Outside of this we do not have any other suggestions because we have tested multiple boards here with our own components and we are simply not seeing this at any point." /:Unquote impressive huh? what to do now....
