I would have liked this story better if people didn’t actually donate hundreds of dollars. Evidently, GoFundMe did shut it down and returned all donations.

Please help me and my family as we have exausted all of our funds. We spent all of our money on lottery tickets (expecting to win the 1.5 billion) and are now in dire need of cash. With your small donation of at least $1.00, a like and one share, I’m certain that we will be able to pick ourselves up from the trenches of this lost and spend another fortune trying to hit it big again! PLEASE, won’t you help a family in need. DONATE NOW.

A link to a story that links to proof that doesn't exist. Might as well link a story of how Intel & Nvidia going bankrupt leaving AMD as the sole supplier to CPU and GPU's.

Bad enough to run the gauntlet of beggars at intersections, retail stores, and gas stations ... now we have the high tech variety that takes their begging to the internet ... I am not sure which is sadder, the stupid people that take to the web to beg for funds to offset their own bad choices, or the stupid people who give them money ... Sic Gloria Transit Mundi :(

This story is from yesterday when the proof existed. I assure you that I saw it with my 2 eyes. Even worse, they managed to get a few hundred in donations before gofundme finally shut it down. This is what happens when instead of raising the bar, society continues to dumb things down to the lowest common denominator. Everyone has a bailout mentality for their stupid decisions.

even my socialist heart would have donated a big O for that sheer stupidity.
WHY would you ever do such a stupid thing.

"Gloria threw up on the bus Monday."

What's that got to do with anything?

You guys with your Latin quotes...... Derideo te.

It's hard to get that latin down so you're right, I'll stick with the English version, "So passes away the Glory of this World" ... which has everything to do with this story and society as a whole

I'm thinking about making a GoFundMe page. I would rather be rich and not have to work. Therefore, your contribution would help me achieve me goals of supreme laziness.

If that's a legitimate quote, then I'm 99% sure it was a joke posting.

Read carefully:

The fact that people actually believed the sob story and donated is facepalm worthy. Surprised it took someone this long to try such a stunt. I'm reminded of the South Park episode "Go Fund Yourself".

Losing all your money on lottery tickets is the same as losing it at the casino, it's a gamble, with terrible odds. Either way you knowingly pissed it all down the drain.

I know they are trying to pass it all off as a joke but would they really have refused the money?

Define joke? It was a real gofundme page that people were really donating too. Now was the person being 100% serious? Who knows. But I also noticed the same thing you did. Give me money so I can waste more on more tickets.

of course not. They are just playing it off now.

Beggars now set up twitch accounts and play games and hope for donations. There have been a few people get $10.000.00 donations.

Unfortunately had someone in the extended family setup a "gofundme" type page so that he could start his life as a professional game player...ala...Twitch style. He was very upset that no-one helped him reach his dream and was very vocal about his hopes being dashed. Fucking millennials.

Knee-jerk reaction was this was a troll gofundme. Whither it was or not, it is sad that some people would actually donate. Or it's possible those who donated majority of the amounts were in on the scheme to troll. Who knows?

If I'm not mistaken this fruitloop got just over 800 bucks before GoFundMe shut her down. The words I want to say can't because it's that bad. but I will say dumbass for spending your life savings on this crap.

Now I will say there is a different between the two. Some people actually do make an actual living just off of twitch between donations and companies sponsoring them. The difference between that however and this is that you are getting something from the people on twitch. People pay to watch their sports team play, they pay to watch concerts, they pay to watch plays, they pay to watch movies, and some pay to watch somebody play games. It could be something as simple as you watch for a few hours and give a $1. But if somebody is popular and have a few thousand watching them well that is a few thousand a day. Which I don't see a problem with as you are at least getting a "show" from them. Real issue is that since a few can actually do this and make money, everyone thinks that they are going to be able to make a living like this.

That is not something you just jump into, you have to start small and work up to a following. He dreams were crushed because he can't get people to watch him, no amount of money will fix that. I wouldn't say it is so much millennials but is people seeing a few people be able to do something and thing that they can do the same thing.

A month or so ago there was a person in the General Mayhem section here that lost his phone and set up a gofundme page asking for donations to help him replace it. Was looking to get an expensive phone as well rather than something basic to get by.

Actually it's worse, as you have much better odds in a real Casino.

The most accurate description of a lottery I've heard is that it's a "Tax on the poor"
There's a reason almost all the "Lucky" stores that have multiple winners are in poor areas.
It's not that the stores are lucky, it that they sell way more tickets than stores in other (less poor) areas.

Most poor people make bad decisions, that's why they are poor.
Spending the few dollars they have on lottery tickets that have virtually no chance of winning is just another bad decision.

Yes and no. It could also just be that the poorer somebody is the more they want to fix that and the better the prize sounds. Somebody with a million dollars isn't going to really care to win the prize as they have money and know there is too much of a gamble to try to win. As you start to go down in net worth the more that prize sounds like a great deal and you are willing to spend a little bit of money on trying to win it. Problem then becomes odds. As you said your odds are better at a casino.

That said I know middle class people at work (which happens at a lot of places) that pitch in something like $5 or $10 a month for them to buy tickets. At this point they have probably spent more than they can ever hope to actually win. But they don't care because they know that one person that won hundreds of thousands so they are convinced they can also. Personally I know a person that won $777,777.77. But I also know the odds of that are very slim so I might buy a scratch off one a year or so, but am in no way going to waste any more than that.

Most the people I work with (middle class) rarely play the lottery. Usually it's just joining a pool at work when the jackpot's bigger than $200 million. I usually join in on one of the pools, because I don't want to be the only one left working at the office in the remote chance the they get a winning ticket :)

It was all a crock to get attention. But the worst thing that comes from it is people legitimately in need of help through no fault of their own, as usual, will get shit all over because of it.

If you're in need of help because you spent all of your money on lottery tickets then you might legitimately need help, but it's totally your fault.

And before anyone gets the idea of doing this for real, the chance of winning the jackpot for powerball is: 1 in 292,201,338, which is mathematically inconsequential. Say you put all of your assets into buying tickets (I'll just go with $100,000 because it's a nice round number and more than anyone stupid enough to try this is likely to have) is 50,000 in 292,201,338 which is, you guessed it, mathematically inconsequential.

Totally, like Tila Tequilla who set up a GoFundMe because her rent was raised to $4500/month! I mean what kind of barbarian society does this to a famous internet whore!?

Seriously, best thing you can do is just ignore it, don't let it stress you out because that doesn't help things go away, and let people do what they want with their own money.

Shit like this would piss me off. I'm currently unemployed and I would need that money more than she does. Been bleeding so much money over the last 3 months trying to look for a job. However I got too much pride which while I had contemplated putting up a GFM, I rather just walk away from my house than sink to this level.

Some are not even gamers, they are just girls pretending they are gamers and playing to get donations. Basically they are cam whores that don't take their clothes off.
