I like how Google essentially just blamed this screw up on Google Translate. Personally, I don't know what the problem is. I thought the whole "Mordor" thing was rather funny.

Google has fixed a bug in an online tool after it began translating "Russian Federation" to "Mordor". Mordor is the name of a fictional region nicknamed "Land of Shadow" in JRR Tolkien's Lord of the Rings books. In addition, "Russians" was translated to "occupiers" and the surname of Sergey Lavrov, the country's Foreign Minister, to "sad little horse".

Hope they don't find the coder to laid that easter egg.

Haha!

Gotta love Google's sense of humor. They should own up to it.

How is this a problem? Isn't that the correct translation?

Russia is probably taking it as a compliment. The Sad Little Horse, perhaps not as much.

Isn't google allowing submitted translations?

Isn't google allowing submitted translations?

It allows users to suggest edits, so if a lot of people suggest that "Российская Федерация" translates as "Mordor", then that's what's gonna be used for all translations.

But the issue is mainly with a relatively frequency and correlation of the words used in two languages. Superman/Batman used to translate as Pokemon in Japan. Or iphone -> android or Lady Gaga -> Britney Spears.
