The city of Los Angeles wants to use license plate data to identify people that frequent areas known for prostitution so they can send letters to their homes. Great use of tax money.

Los Angeles is considering sending “Dear John” letters to the homes of men who solicit prostitutes hoping the mail will be opened by mothers, girlfriends or wives. In a statement issued by her office Wednesday, Martinez said, “If you aren’t soliciting, you have no reason to worry about finding one of these letters in your mailbox.

I have no problem with shaming real Johns. Better yet, put them.I. prison where they belong.

That being said, what about the people who have legitimate business in these areas? Are they going to cause their personal lives harm by sending them these letters too? How are they going to make sure only the right people get them?

That's incredibly messed up. You haven't even convicted a person of a crime (prostitution shouldn't even be a crime in the first damn place, but that's another conversation), but you're going to destroy someone's life, marriage, their children lives, because they were in the wrong neighborhood? I can't even imagine what kind of idiots thought this was a good idea...oh wait, its LA, I can imagine the kind of idiots. Hope you enjoy the lawsuits, jackasses!

Bwhahahaha! Yeah, sure, you betcha darlin. The system will never make a mistake. It will never be used for malicious purposes by the state. No sirree bub.

Some hacker should have a dozen letters sent to her house.

I'm curious, why exactly, do you have this opinion.

you want to imprison those who employ sex workers....

mmmmmmmmmmkay

Taking advantage of a woman in a tough financial situation forced to sell their bodies is absolutely disgustingly evil, and deserving of real hard prison time.

Remember, coerced sex is rape.

Not to mention that a good proportion of prostitutes are the product of human trafficking.

Here's an anecdotal story that happened to someone I know:

Bicycle gets stolen out of garage. Owner of bicycle goes to a nearby area of town with a high density of pawn shops to see if his bike is there. Guy parks his car and is immediately approached by a prostitute, who thinks he's a john looking for a date. Guy tells her to go away, starts walking down the block, notices the whole area is filled with women hanging around who are most likely prostitutes. Guy immediately leaves area and chalks the bike up as a loss.

The system referenced in the article is a terrible idea. Someone with perfectly legitimate business in a rough area of town is going to come home to shame letter, possibly already opened and read by people in his family, who are going to assume the worst right off the bat?

Is it legal to have sex?

Is it legal to sell things?

Is it legal to sell your time to do something, e.g. babysit?

Is it legal to sell your body to do something, e.g. be a professional model?

Why shouldn't it be legal to sell your time to have sex?

You can't agree to the first four things and then turn around and say that it shouldn't be legal to sell your time to have sex; that's special pleading.

A woman that willingly chooses to make money by selling her body is not being raped.

do you even know any sex workers?

look here, perhaps your experience is just lacking

Article states the council voted to ask the City Attorney’s office to *examine the possibility* of using licence plate data. With all the uproar and myriads of possibilities of getting sued I doubt the attorney's office will even approve this hack of an idea.

Actually I'm more surprised more people aren't more upset about the privacy implications of all the plate reader data they are accumulating, how the system is paid for, stored and who has access to it.

You people disgust me almost as much as those who would hire a sex worker.

The statistics are pretty clear on this one. Sex workers are overwhelmingly victims of abuse who started what they do not because they wanted to, but because they had to. Taking advantage of them is a special kind of evil.

I'm done with this thread.

If these areas are so "well known" then crack down on it. End of story? What, why.. Ugh...

There has to be a privacy and/or Human Rights issue here.
Not sure if you have strong versions of these over there.

before they do this, i think they should post maps of these well known areas so us innocent folk don't accidentally drive through there by mistake. ;)

SJWs of course are all over this, such a brilliant idea! Now take the same concept, and have a group that publishes the license plates of young men that frequent gay or transgender areas and forward that to their families and employers. Oops, now its unfathomably evil!

You do realize that with rare exception all women sell sex, at least informally. Marriage is essentially born as a financial contract for exclusive sex rights in exchange for security. How many girlfriends that don't work are essentially exchanging sex for goods and services the male provides? When a guy has sex with his girlfriend and she goes out and uses money from his bank account to buy a new pair of shoes or he gives her an allowance, yes, that's basically saying "Job well done" and finding a more subtle way than leaving money on the night dresser. Its the same reason that in the dating scene the guy pays for the food, the drinks, and may bring gifts, its an informal exchange of currency for sex.

The big problem with sex workers though is the fact that they deflate the market by selling too cheap and taking care of too many guys, which really pisses off other women. Its like if you have a pretty healthy contract as a landscaper for a rich guy, and then all of a sudden there are fifteen illegal aliens that will take care of all the lawns in the neighborhood for next to nothing and you get dumped or have to lower your demands.

Don't be a hater just 'cause you get turned down by hookers.

Well said. :D

Jesus Christ. this is the kind of thing that makes me ashamed to live in this country. this is basically one step away from saying hey Mr Smith, were not sure what your guilty of yet, but we figure you will probably do something wrong at some point so let just go on ahead and move you straight in to prison after high school.

Whoever thought it would be a good idea to ruin innocent peoples live just for being in the "bad part of town" should be hung from a tree in town square.

At some point people are going to say enough is enough; and when they do it's going to get bad really, really bad for all the people who think it's ok to try and control peoples lives and to exploit those who lack power and resources; and the reason it will get so bad is because we all collectively let it get this far.

Then by this logic, I am a slave.

My employer is taking advantage of my unfortunate circumstance of not being independently wealthy. Because of this, I'm forced to work for someone, generating them more money than they actually pay me. If I fail to generate them enough money, I get fired and receive no money at all.

Just fucking Wow...way to stereotype an entire industry that has existed longer than any other. You seriously need to educate yourself because god damn man...that is some grade A ignorance.

Regarding the article;
All this is going to do is drive the prostitutes to hang out in more obscure locations. It's going to be fun to wonder whether that cute girl you decided to chat up in the coffee shop actually is interested in you, or instead plans on giving you an invoice .

This is rather pointless and just wastes time and money better spent on law enforcement.

Prostitution isn't going away, regardless of what the laws are people are going to do it anyway, enforcement doesn't stop it. They should make it legal, and use the money they use now trying to stop it to enforce regulations to keep the workers safe and properly paid. It's already been proven that we can't stop it, might as well try to help the sex workers have a safe work environment.

Wait, hold on. This is inherently wrong.

Since when do married guys have sex?!

being straight foward with the matter at hand instead of bullshitting in a bar and buying drinks/ coke or tendering on a cellphone hoping to land a promiscuous freak.. it really is to bad that it is taboo sooooo much wasted time.

Hah! Well, the contract isn't really written in the male's favor these days. Its like when a town signs an exclusivity agreement with an ISP, but then finds out once the brief courting honeymoon is over that they have you on lockdown and no longer deliver the services promised but you are hit with huge financial penalties if you try to get out of the contract.

Convicted? The person wouldn't even be a suspect of a crime, just a random person driving down the street.

This is a horrible idea. I almost hope they go through with it, so the backlash can maybe put a stop to the license plate scanners.

We decriminalised it here in NZ.. Now the police/government can regulate it (it's illegal under 18, people on temporary visa's cant work in the industry)

"Now workplace safety and health rules, developed in consultation with the prostitutes' collective, apply to sex work. Employment disputes can be referred to the Labour Inspectorate and Mediation Service. There is an obligation on employers and employees to practise and promote safe sexual practices. The Ministry of Health has the responsibility for enforcement. Registration of indoor sex workers with the police was replaced by certification at an administrative law level of brothel operators."

seems to me to be a better option (like marijuana)... you take the cost of policing/prison out of the equation, and give the workers better protection

Lighten up francis.

I've never paid for it, never will, but I have no problem with people that want to buy and sell sex. It's the worlds oldest profession for a reason.

Did you ever stop and notice that the backwards thinking you demonstrate is the very reason the sex industry is so dirty and seedy? Legitimize it, tax it, regulate it and almost overnight you would have the pimps beating their women gone. You wouldn't have

I think the idea you have in your mind is that every prostitute in the world is some nasty skanked out imported sex worker. That's not the case. Often times the type of people you have an image of in your mind are the ones strung out on drugs who will quite literally do anything for their next fix. They aren't being coerced, they are being driven by a terrible addiction. If they can't sell their bodies, they will start robbing or stealing.

The one universal truth you should accept sooner rather than later - is that unless there is a massive population incident where women now outnumber men 5 to 1 -- men are always going to be paying for sex in some way shape or form. By your logic too we should also throw in jail all the jaywalkers and people who have downloaded a song off the internet.

Bad idea, and stop telling other people what they can't do, when it doesn't affect anyone else.

You ever read Mises on sexuality and marriage? He covers a good bit of it in the book "Human Action" and "socialism" while these are books on economics, he covers all aspects, and he very well describes modern day marriage, sex and even feminism. Some of what you say is not 100% correct, but on the same path, or maybe I should say he covers the fine details far better, you would probably find the read very interesting if you have not read it already. As he talks about how it is more or less a sexual contract, where woman is willingly giving up some rights and sexual "freedom" for something in return, such as security, and he also covers prostitution. There are also MANY free agents, lots of the SOB stories you hear are girls who have put them selves in bad situations, there are SO many programs and battered woman's shelters out there for them to go to that will not only help with food and housing but also have job placement etc etc.

Prostitution is illegal.....Because.

Selling sex is wrong and you should go to jail for it!! Unless you video tape it and sell that video for other people to watch....Yet these same people claiming prostitution is wrong are not picketing porn studios and willing to bet many of them watch porn. Talking about double standard. And extremely sick, watching girls being raped like that.
