AMD and Nvidia’s upcoming cards may be equipped with GDDR5X memory, which is bringing some pretty substantial improvements to data rates.

GDDR5X may indeed help graphics card designers at AMD and Nvidia transition between GDDR5 and the energy efficient HBM. The newer, improved GDDR5X is a simple upgrade to graphics card makers offering the "same interface signal pin count". It requires only "limited effort" to upgrade the GDDR5 memory controller on existing designs, it offers reduced power consumption and, perhaps most importantly "takes performance to a new level".

Sweet. We'll be able to run our lowest-common-denominator ports so much better!

If it's cheaper and adequately fast, it will probably take hold before HBM gets going. Might delay HBM by a few years.

If the newer GPU's are already designed for HBM, then these could still be used to increase performance on lower end GPU's, and certainly make the re-badges into lower tier cards easy for the video card makers to do over the next few years, while improving their performance. Probably need that bump to stay relevant once HBM takes off.

probably this will make it into the next update for video gaming consoles (maybe PS4 refresh)

I think this could come in handy for professional cards, which need large capacity of VRAM.

Could be an affordable option for rebadging older budget/mainstream models. Would make sense in that area until the newer HBM related stuff trickles down in a few years.

hmb is here today and both camps are using it for their respective next gen parts

It's nice they'll have something to slap on next generations low-end cards.
