Intel Has 1,000 People Working On Chips For The iPhone

It looks like Intel will be joining Qualcomm in providing modems for Apple’s next-generation iPhones. Some reports suggest that Apple may ditch Qualcomm altogether if Intel truly impresses.

One source said Intel needs a small army of people on the Apple account because of the importance of the project to Intel’s future in the mobile market, because of the complexity of the project, and because Apple is a demanding client with an extremely popular phone.

Let's give it to Intel....

Same for phone OS's, lets ignore Tizen, Ubuntu, Firefox OS, lets bring windows to the phones!!!
 
I doubt they have 1,000 engineers working just to make a modem for a single phone. As the article states it sounds like they are more likely ramping up to be able to provide support for a full SoC integration. With Apple already sourcing from two different vendors they are likely shopping around since Intel still holds the lead in fabrication.
