Purchasing a drone in the near future? You’ll probably have to check in with the U.S. DOT first before flying it.

Under the plan, the government would work with the drone industry to set up a structure for registering the drones, and the regulations could be in place by Christmas.

We do commercial drone projects, but we don't fly them that high and close to the subject.
There are too many people that use this as a hobby with little or no awareness of the danger flying drones high over cities.

Great. Bring on the licensing too.

The idiots have proven themselves incapable of self governing. Those of us that choose to fly reponsibly and with consideration to those around us welcome a means to filter these morons.

And the value of black market unregistered drones just went up. Soon to be announced, the War on Drones.

~150 school shootings since 2013 and we can't do anything about it. Somebody scares a pilot with their RC copter and here comes the long arm of the law. 'Murica!

Thanks to all the jerks who had a hand in making this happen.

I'm sure it's just a small step. I fully expect that we'll see a few more requirements.

If I had to guess:
- Over X weight (IE: bigger than a DJI Phantom) will require a parachute failsafe.
- ADS-B compliance with auto land firmware.
- System to allow for the grounding of all drones by emergency services.
- Government "No Fly" map which would prevent the drone from automatically (GPS) flying into restricted airspace.
- Forced height limiter. Some manufacturers have put this in their software already, but I'd suspect that it might become a requirement.

The first would be in reaction to all of the drones falling out of the sky and striking people. The second and third are for the dumbasses who flew near the fires in CA.

They have RC planes and helicopters that big and fast. If they ignore the RC planes and helicopters and only focus on quadcopters, they're going to look really stupid. Which... you know, wouldn't be a new thing. ;)

Are you high? There are thousands of laws on the books regulating the sale and possession of firearms. There are virtually zero regulating the operation of flying blenders.

Want to do something about school shootings? Stop blaming inanimate objects for the actions of lunatics and instead start actually acknowledging that lunatics exist in the first place that don't give a damn about laws.

Name one gun control law that has been proposed, that would have stopped the most recent shooting.
You can't, because all the political scheming going on is more about removing guns from law abiding people than actually stopping these mass shootings.

How about some REAL gun control legislation:
1. Using a gun during the commission of a felony will result in a minimum 20 year sentence.
2. Using a gun during the commission of a felony where somebody dies (even if you didn't shoot them) is an automatic death penalty.
3. Legal and civil protections for anyone using a gun to defend themselves, unless they are in the process of committing a crime.

nothing but a way to implement control and a way to make money..Next all drones will require a back door access for any 3 letter agency to be able to take over control of any drones as required to ensure the safety of the people and security of the country.

With such harsh mandatory minimums, a lot of criminals that would normally have surrendered will instead choose to go out shooting. And crazy people don't consider the consequences regardless.

2. Using a gun during the commission of a felony where somebody dies (even if you didn't shoot them) is an automatic death penalty.

Sounds like a good way to make sure that a bank robbery where someone dies becomes a shooting spree.

Your definition of 'real' is a bit thin. Your suggestions are similar to some laws already in effect.
Moreover, we all know that the penalty is there to serve as a deterrent and yet, people keep committing crimes that will eventually get them the death penalty.
So I wonder how your 'real' suggestions could help things.0

How 'bout this?

MANDATORY mental evaluation which remains confidential as well as registration of purchased firearms which also remains confidential and cannot be accessed by the general public or authorities, except with a warrant.
That way if wacko Joe decides to buy a gun, he cannot buy any - strawman purchaser would be severely punished - and if someone goes mental, he/she could have his guns seized and eventually returned, or said gun owner could recover them once things settled, or the gun owner could be refunded the money he paid for his/her firearms.

Since recent gun mass shootings involved people with mental instabilities, and how they were no criminals at the time of purchase of their firearms, it seems that different measures deserve to be implemented, that do not involve ban or restrictions for most people.

I guess any potential regulations regarding drones could be similar to HAM radio operators.

If you want to fly at a certain altitude, you should have a certain licence.
If you want to fly on your private property below a maximum ceiling for recreational purposes, you could be granted a less restrictive licence, or just registration without a fee.
And if you still do stupid things... a warning... then a stiff fine... then a couple of months of community service, if you don't get the message.

There is absolutely no place for your intellectual and well thought out reasoning here!

Here's the big questions.

What is officially defined as a drone?

What is officially defined as an R/C Hobby/toy?

Kinda like all the regulations on abortion, gay marriage, marijuana, etc. If gun control wont work neither will any of those.
