AMD and Nantong Fujitsu Microelectronics Co., Ltd today announced the signing of a definitive agreement to create a joint venture combining AMD’s high-volume assembly, test, mark, and pack (ATMP) facilities and experienced workforce in Penang, Malaysia and Suzhou, China with NFME’s established outsourced semiconductor assembly and test (OSAT) expertise. Upon close, the new business will leverage the capabilities of 5 facilities and approximately 5,800 employees to offer differentiated ATMP capabilities and scale to service a broad range of customers. The transaction is expected to close in the first half of 2016, pending successful completion of regulatory approvals.

A very interesting series of moves lately by AMD. Joint developement with Hynix for HBM, various tasks with Samsung, and now a joint venture with Fujitsu.

Keep bringing in companies with common interests with AMD and you start building quite a network of partners to work with. Maybe it is our of necessity, or a long term business strategy, but I like where this seems to be going.

I view this as AMD selling part of it's operations unit for some quick cash.

It definitely is but they will also reduce their annual loses and retain 15 percent ownership of the Penang and Suzhou operations. A 15% share in profits out of those facilities sounds like it'll prevent them from sinking even more (and that's about it).

It's because of ZEN. Obviously, in-house testing has shown how FBA the new architecture is, and how amazing the yields are, that they need partners to help keep store shelves full. Word on the street is that they've already started packaging the new processors, and have filled up a 100,000 sq/ft facilty with new product, ready to go. The same birdy said that we will see this surprise launch on Black Friday, with Wal-Mart, Best Buy, and Costco having secured early-bird inventory.

Sarcasm?
