Areca RAID System

I was copying files and watching a movie from my RAID last night. The movie kept buffering, which I don't recall happening, even when copying files usually. However, at the time, I attributed it to the lengthy list of files being copied. That is, until the system started beeping and said failed on the readout. I couldn't get into the web gui. It times out. I think I should be going to http://192.168.1.100/, right? That's what the readout on the system says, but I can't remember if there should be a port added. It's been a while since I needed to access it. I turned off the system and turned it back on. It said degraded now and I have access to the files, but I still can't get into the web gui to look into what's going on better. What should I do to get in? Thanks!

The address of the card is either whatever you assigned to it manually or a dynamically assigned address. You can use nmap if you cannot tell from your router or other dhcp server what the proper address is. How old is your last backup of the array? Can you please post the complete log and the array layout(s) from the card once you get in? How large is/are the array(s)? RAID 1/5/6?

Thanks for the reply. I installed the app you mentioned, but not right away aware of proper usage. I had a partial backup until yesterday, ironically. I had to repurpose the drive I was using for that because of disk problems on a family member's drive. I do not have any media large enough for a full backup. The volume is about 21 TB. RAID 5. I have 8 3TB disks.

What's even more ironic is that is the very thing I was doing when it went south - writing from the RAID to that drive (after having just copied it over there from the failing drive, which took forever).

After I reboot it, it will work and the files are accessible, but whenever I try to start copying files from it again to finish the transfer I mentioned for a family member, it will fail again.

I would do a parity check on the array, you may have a bad disk or a faulty controller.

I'm not even going to say what was wrong :), but I was able to get in. Here's the events log:

I don't think there's more than one drive that's really bad, but how do I know for sure which one it is since there's more than one reported? Thanks in advance! I hope you can help.

I'm thinking it's channel 1 since that's what has reported reading errors, but I am afraid to remove the drive and replace with a new one since it is degraded, and that's not the one reported as missing in the drives list:

From your log, I am guessing that you have one of those external 8 bay areca chassis? Unfortunately, not only do you have the problems with channel 1m you also have in less than a day the complete failure and/or removal of 3/4 drives. How do you have the enclosure attached to the computer? Multiple drives going like that are often either a backplane (or backplane cable) or power problem. The log does not give me an optimistic feeling. Do you have a older backup of your most important data at least (I know you killed the one from the other day?

Yes, exactly...8 bay external. I have it attached via eSATA. I have a very limited backup in the cloud, but it would be devastating if I were to lose this. It seems like I am just getting back in good shape from the last time I had trouble! :/

And it would also be bad because a family member would lose her content also since only about half of it moved over before this happened!

Well, there are a few steps you should perform first to maximize your chances of recovering your data, some of which may or may not be possible based on your financial situation and on how much value you place on the data. The first thing I would do is to shut down the array, and buy 8 new 3TB disks (as nuts as it sounds, depending on how you have truncation set on the array you might not be able to fit 2 3TB uncompressed images each on 4 6TB disks (you could be a few kB short).) Make current images of the existing drives so whatever we attempt, we can always go back to the current situation if things are made worse. Is this an option?

I truly wish I had the funds to do so at this time. :/

If the disk 1 has read errors, would that be successful for that drive?
