Hahahah! It looks like Cox is going after Rightscorp. There's a penis joke in there somewhere. ;)

Internet provider Cox Communications has hit back at anti-piracy company Rightscorp. While denying responsibility for the alleged copyright infringements of its subscribers, Cox turns the tables, accusing Rightscorp of sharing thousands of copyrighted works without permission.

Like, "know what happens when you don't pay the cable bill, they cut your cox off"

Wow, I like the fact they're actually going after them for what many have believed for years (IP doesn't equal person, Rightscorp leaking their own contracted products to entrap pirates).

For one, Cox explains that there is no evidence of any relevant actual direct infringement. Rightscorp’s system is flawed, they claim, and the IP-addresses could be used by persons other than the account holders.

“Plaintiffs made no effort to determine whether Cox account holders personally committed any infringements, and they cannot tie IP addresses to specific infringers. Plaintiffs tellingly but wrongly argue it is ‘not required for [them] to prove direct infringement’,” the lawyers write.

Good luck convincing a court that, because every person who has ever paid a "red light camera" ticket was convicted under that very notion.

That why red light camera tickets are civil violations and not criminal violations. Because the camera can't prove who actually drove the car. Thus the owner of the car gets the ticket.

Woudn't that work then, since copyright stuff is civil?

None of these anti-piracy companies would exist if people would just stop being so petty with stealing usage rights for inexpensive crap like music and movies (both of which are stupid to even watch or listen to at all, much less steal) and software.

None of these anti-piracy companies would exist if media companies would just stop being so petty and greedy, limiting access to inexpensive crap like music and movies while adding excessive advertisements and DRM.

Fixed that for you.

Fixed that for you.

DRM was sold to content owners and publishers as a way to protect those things from the actions of those freeloaders that are now justifying theft because DRM exists. The underlying problem still remains that people are criminals and will lie, cheat, and steal to get something for free. They should be treated like criminals because even the currently honest ones would steal things if it were easy enough to do so. DRM is a benefit because it at least gets the lazy among the freeloader scum to stop. The rest that are still doing it are far worse and their extra effort to steal things shows intent that holds more value in courts.

not sure if sarcastic, or you just have a boner for outdated content distribution systems?

Yeah sorry, not the boner sporting sorta person over anything thanks. I'm just saying that DRM stuff and companies that go after people for violating copyright laws wouldn't even exist if there wasn't a perceived benefit over the costs of developing DRM systems, the potential loss of sales over people getting annoyed by DRM, and the costs + bad press that pursuing violators ends up causing for the content creator when it acts to protect its stuff. It's all bad news for the companies and they're only going out of their way to do this stuff because people in general are losers and thieves who steal inexpensive things they could easily afford or substitute with free alternatives.
