Alabama Passes Massive pr0n Tax

Wow, holy shit, so if you buy a $29.99 blu-ray porno in AL, you must pay an additional $12 on top of that? Hooooooly shit.

Hell, Even if you buy a Playboy off a newstand for $8 you have to pay an additional $3.20....

That's nuts. How anyone can justify a 0% to 40% tax hike is beyond me....

It passed committee, not actually passed into law. Not that it matters, it will pass into law anyway.

Thing is around here in the south all these conservatives preach their conservative family values with a "do as I say, not as I do" holier than thou attitude. Just ask Governor Bentley.

Yay religious fuckheads trying to force their beliefs on others. And veggie anyone tries you know damn well that's what drove this, banning won't work so tax the hell out of it.

So like, what happens if you're purchasing that stuff for your church or Sunday school? Can you use your non-profit tax exempt status for that?

Sin taxes are always winners with government (and usually with the people) ... whether it is alcohol, cigarettes, porn, or the new legal frontier (weed) it is free and easy tax money for them ;)

Can't pay our debt, economy in the shitter, Obama running our foreign policy like a joke, Obama encouraging class/race warefare.

but hey lets focus on making sure people don't watch porn or gamble on sports/internet.

They could make more money if they didn't raise taxes on porn and legalized prosttution.

Even a low tax on legal prostiution would leave them with money to burn.

Almost makes me want to move back to Alabama. :D

Naaaa, no tech jobs and it is too hot there.

I love how people here are blaming religion for this.

They have been in neck high water for some time with a budget, can't come to agreement on the current budget, and they tried to raise just about every other tax they could, including tabbaco, but all failed to pass, so the LAST shot was fired at adult entertainment, which seems like it might make some headroom, though it still would not cover their spending problem and would probably just result in more people getting it online for free than paying crazy taxes like this.

So stop spending so much money.

God damn democrats, they need some republican leaders so that they don't pass silly taxes like this... oh wait.

Bentley must be running out of money or something. When he came into office, he said he wouldn't take a salary until we were in the green. He also ran on no tax increases.

He is not a conservative or trustworthy IMHO since he has been pushing more taxes for quite a while now.

Nobody here wants higher taxes.

He keeps threatening to shut down stuff unless he gets his way. Whiny little spoiled bratty baby is what he has become.

You were in the wrong spot. Huntsville basically had no real recession in 2009 and Montgomery is good for tech too if you are in the military. Those two places would be the only reason I would ever go back.

Back on subject, Biggest problem I see with this, the other laws they have against sex shops, like how you have to sign a release that says it's for medical reasons and all that other BS. It's going to end up like internet taxes you are supposed to self report, but no one does.

Watch how some of the adult shops will either shut down, or just move across state lines, and these idiots will be back to complaining about a budget shortfall, when they could've cut their pet pork-barrel projects, or the need to repave highways that were just fully paved <5 years ago, or stop with all these tax breaks for corporations that eventually pack up and leave after 2 years.

Ugh, the idiots that I chose not to vote for keep making this state worse.

Highways are the most overblown expenses ever. They spent a billion dollars here to build a 5 mile stretch of freeway. For that price, it better be lined with solid gold bricks.

Given the tax windfall all the States legalizing Mary Jane have gotten I would expect more states (even the conservative ones) to start looking at this ... although I am not 100% on board with the legalization it is hard to argue with the monetary aspect ... maybe we can finally leave 19th century morality behind and legalize brothels as well ... governments really need to start thinking out of the box a little

Huntsville has plenty of tech jobs.

And the problem is not the heat, it is the humidity.

I was from the southern part. Talk about a tech vacuum; It seemed it was like 50 years behind the rest of the country.
And yes, it is HOT there; Meaning awful humidity.

Interstate 10 through just the City of Mobile is being resurfaced, again. The 13-mile stretch from the exit of the Wallace Tunnel at Texas Street (mile 25.5) to mile marker 12 was fully paved about 5 years ago, cost a few billion; then most of it was resurfaced 2 years ago for a "few hundred million", and now it's being resurfaced again.

How about repaving an entire highway because they used defective pavement.

Yeah, I saw that. Something similar happened in Wisconsin with I-94 going from Black River Falls to the WI/MN state line in Hudson.

I think several states used defective pavement, to 'save money (which in some states, that money was pocketed)', just to redo the whole damn thing again.

Yeah.

Except this tax is illegal.

-Adult book tax
-Rated R/Adult games tax

All hilariously failed, as they are essentially censorship.

Because they are the only group that thinks this kind of thing is acceptable.

Sooo...Blanket blame a religion because porn was the last thing on a long list to get a tax hike, by government officials where religion is nothing more than a pin you put on your jacket....Yeah ok.

I'm over in P'cola. Just wait until they start on the I-10 bridge project. But a much much needed project.
