This will end well.

The website of the UK's National Crime Agency was briefly affected by a distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack today, just a few days after the agency announced the arrest of six teenagers for using a paid DDoS service. Lizard Squad, the group behind the attack service, is claiming responsibility on Twitter—and turning it into an advertisement for the service's next version.

Ha, These punks actually think they are untouchable... they will get caught sooner or later.

Doesn't Ars realize that they're extending the free advertising to LS with this exposure? Things had actually quieted down with the frequency of DDoS attacks because the news wasn't paying attention to them anymore.

I think it does, but Ars should report on it at any rate.

multiple members of this group were previously arrested, thats why it died down. Had nothing to do with press coverage

DDoS attacks have not died down, perhaps reports of DDoS attacks have died down, or even just attacks from LS, but not the overall number. Also there are more countermeasures being put in place to help mitigate DDoS attacks.

This, plus you need metrics + timeline to say whether they are more or less common. Ex - Report from Akamai, which actually provides DDoS mitigation and "witnesses" DDoS attacks, cites frequency of attacks is up 132% in Q2 2015 from Q2 2014. If you shop around there are other IT sec providers whose numbers show similar trends, so even if they are not being reported on (most likely because they are being mitigated and therefore ineffective), does not mean the attacks are not happening.

Not only are the DDoS attacks up, they have newer types of DDoS attacks and they are much larger than before. Arbor also usually provides some pretty decent reports on attacks as they are used in most of the large ISPs out there.

Meant to include some links here and here.

Also Arbor is the vendor that Google uses for their global threat metrics.

We see quite a few IPs in our data centers get null routed daily, it's a very common occurence, and it is definitely on the rise.
