Why is Project Ara dumping electropermanent magnets? Apparently they can't pass drop tests. Whoops.

Now the Project Ara Twitter accounted has shared a tidbit of news that might offer a partial explanation of the delay. The electropermanent magnets that were supposed to hold the hardware modules in place don't pass drop tests.

I always envisioned this idea working like that. Like how you used to drop your old phone and the battery cover and/or battery fell out. Now you drop it and have to resemble your entire phone, instead of just putting the battery back in. "hey, anyone see my my GPS module and speakerphone?"

I'm not at all surprised by this. It doesn't really matter long-term, there are plenty of other options. Sping-loaded latches and an exterior cover spring to mind right off the bat.

Bad idea phone is still a bad idea. News at 11.

But where are super geeks going to get a phone with modules? Rainbow and golden retriever printed modules!

I swear the engineers on this project are soaking google like seasoned pro's.
