Yeah, a bit late.
Still a lot of confusion so maybe this will help.

Ignore labels (FTW, SC, SSC, etc) and only use the 4-digit part number in ascending order.
IE: 3973 is better than 2975.

This ignores EVGA's binning process since we know nothing about it.

I understand the ones on the right (the 397x series) are the ACX 2.0+ with much improved cooling (EVGA claims memory chips run 14% cooler, MOSFETs run 47% cooler, GPU runs 6% cooler). I'm also aware that the ones on the left are the bad design. But what about the ones in the middle - are those considered acceptable or not?
 
Wow, I did not know the 39XX series had a full plate for better VRAM and VRM cooling. Good to know if I ever grab a 970 for a friend build in the future.

Eh, so I have one of the low end ones (2975). Still manages to stay under 60*C in most gaming. Can't complain.
 
mine is a 3979, can I assume the better heat sink?
