You can make your own ferro-fluid for next to nothing. Plenty of examples on youtube. The cost is in whatever magnetic backplane and programming they have doing all the work.
 
I want one.. now to find the materials to make one... would be a really cool project.
 
I just watched the first 5 seconds of the video and what immediately came to my mind was a ferrofluid.

I could be wrong though.
