Which would you go with and WHY?

I have two options:
NAS4Free
running on recycled Atom 330 NVidia IONITX 4 Gigs Ram (2 core + 2HT @ 1.6GHz)
3 WD Red 3TB drives ZFS RAIDz 5 with OS embedded on 120Gig SSD (about 5 years old)

Synology DS415Play
3 WD Red 3TB drives in Raid 5

Purpose
1. Stream mkv handbrake movies to Android or Roku 3 (Plex preferred) but can go with synology's custom app. I want to rip my DVD collection to the NAS.
2. Backup home movies documents and photos from multitude of devices.

Will be hard wired using 1Gbit Ethernet connection to an unmanaged switch which is wired to a dual band wireless n network. Rokus are hard wired.

Linux experience is limited but I am very tech literate.

I'm leaning towards the home brew NAS4Free. But I'm worried I won't be able to stream.
