Uber just dodged a bullet in Canada. After all the protests, bans, burnings and arrests, it's nice to have some good Uber news for a change.

Judge Sean Dunphy dismissed the application and said there was no evidence the company operates as a taxi broker, according to a copy of the ruling provided by Uber. "We are pleased with today’s ruling, which confirms that ridesharing is a new business model, distinct from traditional taxi services," Ian Black, general manager for Uber Canada, said in a statement.

Toronto Mayor John Tory has said new technologies such as Uber's are here to stay and the city must figure out a way to work with them
So just get rid of that $100,000 price to get a taxi plate and any other licensing fee's everything will be hunky dory.

The Mayor in Toronto already said Uber was there to stay, the law needs to at least attempt to keep up with the times. The taxi industry was a necessary network in the days before smart phones, it's a monolithic fossil now.

That's one bit of good news. Next, places like Montreal where the mayor is clearly pushing the taxi union's agenda and even has the provincial tax review agency giving uber grief and just wants them declared illegal...

Nah, dump the entire plate system and license the drivers instead. Right now it's a first-in system where the jerks who bought in first get all the money, like a pyramid scheme. Why can people sell the plates? They belong to the city, not the licensee. The whole thing is a giant scam.

The taxi boards do exist for a reason. After a rash of taxi cab driver shootings here in Winnipeg a few years back they made it law that taxis had to install shields. They also make sure that taxi drivers are held to a standard in order to get a taxi licence. A speeding ticket or two and anyone can keep driving a car if they pay the increased cost of there licence. To get a taxi licence just like getting a class 1 to drive a truck your held to a higher standard. Something like Uber completely bypasses all that stuff... its unsafe for everyone involved. I know where I am driving for uber would be crazy stupid. There is a very good reason every taxi on our streets here have shields and silent alarms. lol

Yes, most probably... Don't mess with unions in a socialist environment...

After reading about how poorly Uber drivers actually get paid, it's easy to understand the reason unions get organized...
