It looks like Australia is taking drastic measures to block access to pirate sites once and for all. You know, because that has always worked in the past. ;)

A few minutes ago Australia passed controversial new legislation which allows for overseas 'pirate' sites to be blocked at the ISP level. Despite opposition from the Greens, ISPs and consumer groups, the Senate passed the bill into law with a vote of 37 in favor and 13 against. Expect The Pirate Bay to be an early target.

Nothing like wasting taxpayer money on these "wars" on piracy, drugs, etc...

Did they ban VPN's too?

Or was this just the legislative equivalent of pissing into the wind?

of course this will also extend to censoring non-pirating sites such as pornographic sites, government protest, and unfavorable political sites. Censorship

The old bastards in the Senate rarely realise there is more to the internet than Hotmail.com and youporn.

they have to put on the good face to the world community that they are at least paying lip service to fighting piracy. while everyone here realizes that it is a completely useless exercise, they are more playing a game of governmental kiss-ass with their peers than actually put something in that works.

Pretty much the very defition of politics..

Sometimes I don't know what's worse, politicians in power or people choosing to vote politicians over more qualified condidates into power.

I believe Australia charges you by your usage. So Usenet+VPN or a Seedbox and posibly a VPN would be all they'd need.

They keep going like this and they'll have a comparable internet setup with the north koreans.

Needing a VPN to get around it just stopped like 95+% of the people who use it and not because of the cost.

If it stops one illegal download, it's worth it. :)

Politicians need to get some people that know what they are doing to help deal with things. Get some experts help on how to go about fixing the problem. Like many have said - VPN. This would have been known easily, even with some of the people from [H] were consulted. But, the law is just one of those 'feel good' laws. It looks and sounds like they are doing something, but it doesn't do anything to stop pirates.

The corporate uproar that would result from a government attempting to ban VPN connections would be highly entertaining to watch. Long story short, VPNs aren't going anywhere.
