This guy would have normally been crowned the "stupid criminal of the day" but it's still pretty early.

According to investigators, the suspect is an Uber driver who’d given a woman a lift to the airport and then circled back to her home, likely thinking it’d be empty, reports 9News. But the woman’s roommate was home during the burglary attempt around 1 p.m. in the afternoon, and allegedly caught the man trying to break in through the back of the house.

Just added it to the long list of reasons of why I won't use UBER.......its uber stupidity..

For all of the external grief Uber gets they seem to be their own worst enemy far too often.

This is why the for hire transportation industry is so heavily regulated. This is why Uber needs to follow the same rules everyone else does which includes driver checks, and carrying proper commercial livery insurance. Your State Farm personal auto insurance does not cover running a for hire service.

I thought Uber dealt with the insurance issue a long time ago, providing 1m/1m in coverage when their drivers are on a run and 50k/100k as long as the app is open. When the drivers aren't on a run, it's just a private vehicle.

And this has happened many times before with taxi drivers and in a few larger cases even found a ring of taxi drivers that would tip off 3rd parties of when/where homes would be empty etc etc....Soooo, yeah, strawman.

Uber also covers (as already stated) the drivers using the app, so you might want to do some research into this before jumping to conclusions.

Uber is one level above hitchhiking. It's the Craigslist of Taxi services. Really stupid and dangerous to use it. Spend a little more and hire a real taxi.

By this article it would seem Uber doesn't perform a criminal background check on the drivers.

The uber driver forums are a fun place to read about how much they hate the company.

I can't tell if you're being sarcastic or serious... taxi drivers do far worse on a daily basis around the world. And Uber drivers are insured, and still has nothing to do with breaking and entering.

Taxi drivers in the US do not universally have to perform background checks. In Texas for example, you don't need a special commercial license to be a taxi driver, and only certain cities can put in extra mandates.

Absolutely, so much safer! http://wkrn.com/2015/02/20/cab-driver-arrested-for-sexual-assault-of-belmont-student/
A Yellow Cab taxi driver was arrested Thursday for sexually assaulting a Belmont University student earlier this month.

Samir Hindieh, 56, was taken into custody after police identified him through a separate case involving a woman who was sexually assaulted by a cab driver in Nashville on New Year’s Day.

7 taxi drivers arrested for assaulting passengers:
"What we're seeing is an increase in physically manhandling their fares," Linton says. "Striking them. Pulling them out of their cabs. One woman was pulled out by her ankles. That driver is under arrest."
