If you've downloaded anything that is on Google Play recently, you'll probably want to read this.

First of all, the apps are on Google Play, meaning that they have a huge target audience – in English speaking and other language regions as well. Second, the apps were already downloaded by millions of users and third, I was surprised that the adware lead to some legitimate companies.

I don't see a problem here since Google products are all trojans offering superficially legitimate looking candy treats as bait to lure in human cattle and subject it to data analysis and advertisements.

Well that's cynical.

I mean, you're right, but that's cynical.

They have drugs to treat this kind of thing, you know.

An article written by a security / anti-virus company stating apps are infecting people, millions, you won't know which app, and it could take days/weeks to infect you. Total scar tactic attempting to sell security software.

How can this article be linked to as a "news" article when it's CLEARLY a promotion for AVAST.

Anyhoo, why do I get the feeling that if I drill down past the bait headline, it'll be much about nothing.? This is bordering on "send this to five people" level of sensationalism.

no they don't, This level of delusion is cause by too much exposure to iDevices, and is fatal

I've never owned an Apple product. Though I've had an Android thingy or two. :p

Quoted for truth. Gotta love CreepyUncleGoogle! We'd be lost without him. <3

Aw gee thanks! I feel all warm an fuzzy inside...though I think that's because I swallowed a bunch of felt and cotton balls trying to soak up that disgusting butterscotch flavored hot cocoa I just drank. :(

Google's attitude would be, just buy a new phone to fix the problem after all its 2 months old you're about to fall off our give a shit list anyway.

Unfortunately there are no drugs to treat stupidity which you seem to suffer from. Google posts openly in its privacy statement that you agree that all your computer use habits get uploaded to Google and can be used for marketing purposes.

And by the way, this is what I've been saying all along and everyone was ridiculing me. Play store is riddled with malware and has been from day 1. The whole concept of openness and post-release detection is totally flawed.

Cell phones can even be used for payments, they should be completely locked and closed ecosystems. Any new app should go through bank security like scrutiny.

Well, I'm glad I got a Windows phone. Sounds like it's the most secure in this arena.

Each time you unlock your device an ad is presented to you, warning you about a problem, e.g. that your device is infected, out of date or full of porn. This, of course, is a complete lie.

Well shit, if they're going to install malware on my phone, the least they could do is follow through with their threats. :p

If that's true, it's for the same reason why Macs are the most secure; no one uses them (relative to iOS and Android), not because they're any more hardened.

As always in interwebz security, if you have any bit of common sense, then you should be pretty safe for the most part. ;)

If you've downloaded anything that is on Google Play recently,
... and install apps with crazy permissions for what they do, ...
you'll probably want to read this.
Inserted words to narrow the appropriate audience. :D

The post is not surprising. There are plenty of free games stuffed with adware and contact mining, plus whatever else it can access from shared storage.

Permissions: read before allowing.

The problem is most people do not understand which permission is necessary for function and which is malicious. Play store should be approval based like Apple store is, this way the risk of malware is greatly reduced.

Of course it makes getting accepted that much harder for the developers but that's only a good thing.

They'll learn sooner or later. :p

The reviews on the page usually give a good idea about whether the permissions are excessive. If someone doesn't heed the warnings, it's their own fault.
