Thinking about hooking up with someone on Craigslist for a little sexy time? I would think twice about that if I were you. :eek:

Cruising for sex on Craigslist personal ads resulted in a 15.9 percent increase in HIV infections after the website entered various U.S. markets, according to a recent study by the University of Minnesota published in MIS Quarterly.

Wouldn't an increase in poor sexual protection habits be as much a factor as how people are choosing to find partners ... regardless of how you find your partner, you are going to be at higher risk for disease if you are not using proper protection and engaging in short term non-monogamous relationships ;)
 
if you're going to use a prostitute at least use one of the high end escort agencies...Craig's List seems on the same level as street walkers

I just looked through some of the ads in my local NY Craig's List...people would actually pay those women for sex?...and without a condom?...even if they paid me I wouldn't have sex with them...and the pics that actually look decent look fake

Isn't it far more likely that around the time that Craigslist has made it to various markets is also about the time that open homosexuality is becoming far more socially acceptable?

And basically the statistics for being infected are almost all white gay men, followed by black gay men, then hispanic gay men, then black heterosexual women, with white and asian straight dudes basically non-existent. Circumcised (reduces HIV transmission rate by as much as 60% per the World Health Organization) white guys are your safe bet if you don't want AIDS ladies. Mmmhmm, check yo privilege. Just make double-sure he's not even the tiniest bit fruity and doesn't use drugs that involve needles.

The rise in infections is often attributed to modern drugs therapies (to mostly prevent AIDS deaths) for treating HIV and carelessness really. No offense, but gay people are going to have sex regardless of how society feels about it. lol

It would be nice if the researcher actually made a DIRECT link to Craigslist (perhaps interviewing the recent infected)

Is it just Craig's List though? I mean with the rise in Gindr, Tinder and the like, it seems like it would make more sense to say that the rise in quick access sex provided by the internet has increased HIV infection.

It was 57% of people with HIV are tres homeaux, not 57% of homeaux are tres infected. I just read it wrong.

BTW, bonus for straight guys, its far less likely for a straight male to contract HIV from an infected female than the other way around.

But the main point stands:
From 2008 to 2010, HIV infections among young black/African American gay and bisexual men increased 20%.

Originally, I went on Craigslist because I kept reading about it on [H]. Everyone who works in technology is sort of expected to know everything about technology ( which is unrealistic ).

In 2007 / 2008, people would use Craigslist to find rock climbing partners. I was an avid indoor climber at one point ( a member of 2 different gyms at the same time ).

I studied the hard sciences in the UK. I don't have a bio-med background, so I find bio-med very interesting. I kept noticing that people would post they they have herpes, so I read up on it ( I was really ignorant about it, like most people ). It's disturbing that STD clinics don't even test for herpes... but that's another story.

No, I don't have any STDs ( that I know of; I've been celibate for 8 years + ). My mother is a prudish nurse. You should have seen her reaction when I found a stash of porn and panties in the woods and brought the magazines home and stored them in the family room cabinet, as a kid.

I had to take a mandatory Psychology course because people were dying in my computer programming course ( 3 people died ). 14 years after dropping out of school, I still read Psychology books; I find it fascinating.
 
Not sure about this study as I though that the decrease in use of condoms was the primary cause of the recent increase HIV infections.
But one thing is certain, safe sex is the key (and abstinence is the safest). ;)

He didn't "get AIDS", he became infected with HIV. AIDS is a later result of being infected with HIV.

Just about half the people with HIV are over the age of 50 so that's probably is more what they are used to. But don't get it twisted, Grindr and Tinder have probably added to the numbers too.

There was an article a couple of years ago about craigslist hookups where it essentially turned out that- at least for straight people - it was mostly a bunch of scammers and practical jokers, and very few people actually wound up getting laid on there.

Can't seem to find the link now though.
