Share your Netflix password with a friend? That's a trip to the big house.

"Under the new proposal, sharing your HBO GO password with a friend would be a felony," Nate Cardozo, an attorney with the Electronic Frontier Foundation in San Francisco, told an audience of researchers and IT pros Saturday (Jan. 17) at ShmooCon 2015, a security conference held annually in Washington, D.C.

Hopefully someone with some sense will read this legislation before blindly passing it...nevermind, we're talking about congress :(

Miley Cyrus was Hannah Montana when Bush was president, and now this. Thanks Obama!

I think this guys motto is "Let's see what we can fuck up next !"

Can't we fire these people yet? I doubt they read anything. They just collect a paycheck and vote as they are paid to.

This has no effect on attacks and scammers from outside the country (which is the real threat), and will put innocent Americans at risk to persecution from their own government

and people wonder why i want a smaller government with less power over my daily life

What a great piece of legislation, our government knows just how to serve up best.

On a related note, I highly recommend lobotomies. Make you much happier with the government.

Sounds like there are some unintended consequences that need to be dealt with.

Many of the high level ideas aren't bad though, they just need to be shored up a bit.

There is no government created problem that can't be solved with more money.

Thank Goodness we only have *two more years* of these really dumb people to endure...! At least, Congress has been cleaned out of most of the riff-raff...next come the executive offices. It's going to take a new Congress and a new executive administration a couple of *years* to try and straighten out the horrible messes Obama and the Dems have created. Obama is a one-man wrecking crew! Too bad they don't have the guts to impeach him on the grounds of simple incompetence. Obama is a joke making a joke out of the White House and the office of the presidency--too bad it's a particularly funny joke...:/

At this point I honestly wouldn't be surprised if the Verbal Morality Statute became a real thing...get your credits ready fellas...

I would also suggest giving lobotomies to the Obama administration, starting with Obama himself, of course, thinking that "a happy government is a good government"...but, I just read they've already had their lobotomies..! If you look at the idiot smile Obama seems to perpetually wear when he talks about what he isn't going to do to secure the borders or what he won't do to stop the beheading of Americans on global television--that's all the proof I need...;) It explains so much...!

Sturmangriff, you have been fined one credit, for violation of the verbal morality statute. Be well.

So, politicians suck at technology issues.

What else is new.

IMHO, it wouldn't hurt to stiffen up laws surrounding "cybercrimes" (god I hate that term) but they would actually have to be reviewed by people outside politics who actually understand what they are talking about.

Besides, this isn't a law, or even a bill. They are some high level ideas, very light on details from the white house. Whatever version might eventually wind up in a bill, would probably have appropriate exceptions and other details to avoid many of the unintended consequences.

IMHO, whatever is done will have relatively little effect though, unless we are able to get Russia to start extraditing their online criminals, and that's probably not going to happen any time soon.

Best solution would be to just disconnect Russia from the internet. Just cut all lines going in and out of Russia :p

I highly doubt it will take a couple of years to straighten out everything. There are tons of Obama appointees to the courts and bureaucracies that will still be there for a long time after he leaves. Also our economy is still sitting on a giant ticking time bomb because none of the problems that resulted in 2008 has been resolved, as a matter of fact things got even worse. Debts across all sectors have soared, corporate, gov, private. Obama is just a puppet for the general populace to get mad at while distracted from the real culprits.

Hey now, don't be all glass is half empty. I mean look at it this way. We can all shop around RICO suits against all the major ISPs and wireless carriers for deep packet inspection, commandeering all port 25 traffic, etc. Eventually someone will get to sieze all their assets.

I mean the internet will be totally non-functional, but the sheer glee at seeing comcast, verizon, etc. get what's coming to them should keep millions partying for like what.. a year?

Yeah, you can thank House Republicans, "the party of NO!" for that one. Obstructing, watering down and filling with loophole amendments, every single attempt at fixing the problem.

But yes, I do agree that Obama is either the worst negotiator of all time, or a milquetoast corporatist. His policies are a lot more conservative than the promises he made to get himself elected, and are in reality closer to Reagan himself, than to the "socialist" the crazy deep end of the right often accuse him of being.

Just imagine politicians editing and censoring the net where people are afraid to saying things
and everyone just chokes.

I love that liberals run around saying fascism is "on the right". You wouldn't be having this problem or the Illinois facebook shit with a smaller more limited government.

Too bad the problem doesn't lay solely at the feet of the democrats. The republicans have sold out, too.

I read the proposed changes and the some of what's in the article is the usual EFF hyperbole. The law does need to be updated, and if it's heading in that direction hopefully there's plenty of discussion and research involved. As far as the version Obama endorses, it has close to a 0% chance of passing in a Republican controlled congress.

Other stuff in the article, like Steve Jobs using a Bluebox in order to defraud phone companies, is really fraud. It wouldn't take an update to the CFAA in order to prosecute such a case.

You just had to know that any effort on behalf of "the people" were going to stink of lobbying.

I see this sort of shit and I realise why so many Americans are so disillusioned with their government. This shit makes global news and the hooting masses abroad scoff and giggle, but the truth is that it doesn't take much for any system to go down the same path. In fact most are. Americans hate it as much as anyone else, and yeah, there will be partisan finger pointing but they all know that the two parties are only in a competition to grovel to the same rich masters.

Obama got his stimulus. No one prevented it, no one stood in the way of it. The stimulus didn't fix the economy, so then he moved on to the ACA - which also was passed.

Every single piece of legislation Obama wanted, he got. The only legislation that Obama wanted and didn't get, was a renewed "assault" rifle ban. You may recall him stating that "The children of Sandy Hook deserve a vote!" in a past SotU speech. which was a preemptive blaming of those obstructionist republicans you like to keep bringing up. Guess what? Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, "hit pause" on debate over firearms altogether, pulling the legislation from the floor indefinitely. I guess The Children didn't deserve a vote from vulnerable red state dems, huh?

Everything Obama has wanted, from Lilly Ledbetter to ANWAR to Keystone to the ACA to the stimulus to arming the FSA to the Iraq pullout to amnesty, he has gotten. Every piece of Obama directed legislation that his party has brought to the floor, passed. Everything else he desired he procured via executive fiat.

Obama has gotten everything he has asked for and solved nothing.

government cannot be limited. You cannot limit a group of people who have a legal monopoly on the use of force. They will expand their power at every opportunity.

The only thing you can do is abolish it entirely.

Heck .. We're still trying to fix the crap Reagan and Bush 2 messed up.

It doesn't matter who controls what, they're all pawns.

With republicans like these who needs Democrats? The first act of a Congress elected to block anymore of Democrats & Obama's nonsense was roll over and give Democrats everything they wanted on normalizing illegal immigrants with a bow on it. Which ultimately is designed to pad the electorate with future Democrats which will keep the Republicans out of office for decades. They have 5 or few election cycle of ever being relevant again and then nothing.

Really? What a load of utter BS. Reagan brought us out of the worst economies since the Depression into prosperity that lasted for almost 20 years. There's a reason when people said Obama was the worst President ever, some people objected and brought up Jimmy Carter. They do so less now, I think there's consensus on Obama now, but in all fairness Jimmy only had one term.

There is no way a Republican controlled Congress is passing anything Obama wants.

This, and the few things he couldn't ram through were done with presidential memoranda and executive orders to run around Congress anyway. His policies have been horrible and failed as anyone who lives in reality could easily see long in advance. The issues are wholly his responsibility.

Really, before even taking full office, they gave him his spending bill with money for his executive order based illegal alien normalization plan.

Grow up.
