Pirate Bay Co-Founder Says It Should Stay Closed

Maybe that little stint in prison straightened this guy out? I mean, unless this is just an act, Sunde seems to be talking sense.

Earlier this week, Sweden's police took down The Pirate Bay, the world's most contentious torrent site. One person who won't be mourning the closure is co-creator Peter Sunde, who would be happier if the site never came back. Just one month after being released from prison, Sunde took to his blog to describe his disillusionment with what the website had grown to represent and its "distasteful" adverts.

There were some seriously gross ads on that site. I mean, they might do it for old guys, but for the rest of the world, yuck.

Care to elaborate. I don't think I've ever visited the pirate bay. I don't even know the URL off hand.

They were like .gifs of implant-obnoxious women with text banners about wanting their dad or something. Pretty revolting, but I guess they're targeted at a certain audience. :(

Im sure a few of you know about all the Russian based sites. You never hear anyone talk about them. I think the powers that be would rather people not be educated on what's really out there. PB is nothing compared to a few of the Russian ones that will never get taken down.

while sad, i tend to agree.. TPB should probably stay closed. After it gets put back up.. then they voluntary close so they can claim victory

Pretty much this.

The guy's anti-establishment, so a site made with the purpose of making money off of ads goes counter to the original intent of the site he started. They sold it to some unkown company so it's not like the site represents anything anymore, it's just a torrent site in an ocean of torrent sites, just has a name made famous by the media companies, which in turn feeds the ad business model.

The whole thing is kinda funny I think.

Maybe the founder should have thought of that a long time ago before ya know, prison...

No, they're just the only people dumb enough to click on ads in the first place so they make the ads that much more enticing to increase the rate. I can't remember the last time I clicked on an ad *on purpose*.

It has nothing to do with who clicks them and everything to do with the fact that they're up there to begin with. It's pretty obvious that old perverts use torrents based on the ad content. Seriously, I saw those once and was like, "No, I think I'll buy it from Amazon/ebay/the local mall."

I don't think its the prison that deterred him, but the fact that his "fuck you commercialism" website turned into a at least quasi-commercial enterprise.

Please, we bust people at work torrenting all the time. We have security alerts we send out to techs and management to bust the users, and they are all walks of life. Men, women, young, old, you name it. And these are often people that makes triple digits!

The ad content is the way it is because LEGITIMATE advertisers want nothing to do with a website as notorious as the PIRATE bay. That leaves you only the slimeball advertisers, that will pay to tattoo a prostitute with their logo if you let them.

I use noscript and ad block so maybe Creepy Uncle can answer this:

what makes these ads targeted towards old perverts vs. middle aged or young perverts?

I think you're mistakenly lumping all torrent users in with TPB types. Sure lots of people use it (even I do, but I genuinely use it for Linux distros since some people only provide downloads via torrents which annoys me so much), but not everyone that does is a disgusting old pervert like the ones that the ads on TPB are obviously targeting.

It's the daddy part of it that makes it clear its for old people (btw - I don't know if you realize this, but people who are middle aged are just younger old people, but they still fit that category).

It's probably because he can't have anything to do with the site ever again, including said ad revenue money as talked about above, although adblockers make ads a thing of the past on just about everysite out there, well except this one because these ads actually are relevant to my interests.

The pirate bay was running some of the worst advertising on the internet.

The whole "FOR MEN ONLY!" gaming/cartoon porn stupid shit
fake "for chat now in your area!" women gif ads that looked like they were from the 90's
the "Download HERE" click bait links that want to install stuff.

Basically TPB was getting paid by some of the shadiest advertising companies on the net to post their garbage to the masses. I wouldn't be surprised if these ad companies were actively attempting to run malware exploits from their ad frames.

He seems to be some kind of a religious nut or just stuck up if some porn ad disturbs him

TPB is probably the most known torrent site. I don't torrent that much at all (I use a service we can't talk about:), but it is the first thing I think of and have used to get content that I couldn't via the service that cannot be named.

I am willing to bet there are more people like me that use the service because its what they know easily vs looking into other alternatives then "old dirty perverts" .

I would tend to believe Ducman's theory before yours. Even if I ignore your tendency to lump everyone not exactly like you into some negative stereotype...

It is already back up. /shrugs, since it is just a site with links i don't really see how could they ever shut it down properly.

I wasn't really trying to get you to think about yourself in a negative light or start a discussion where people who do fit the stereotype wanna drag everyone else who doesn't into the same category so they're not alone. :( Try not to think about what you do that way. Except if whatever you're doing that you don't wanna talk about, then maybe it's a good idea to reconsider doing it since there's some guilt associated with it. I think it's really important from a mental health perspective to not feel like you need to run around hiding a lot of things (everyone has stuff they don't want to discuss, but the less the better) so if you can get rid of those kinds of addictions, it could be better for you in the long term and maybe if you're upset at the government for invasive surveillance, this would also make those kinds of worries go away.

Too bad we couldn't do this with cable TV. They have more ads than content.
Funny thing is Dish network did try to do this with TV, with their Hopper technology, granted it didn't work in real time but from what I gathered it automatically skipped commercials of anything you're watching. Net result, CBS shut off all broadcasts for them until they changed their tune.

There's nothing wrong with the pirate bay. and the ads? Hasn't anyone ever heard of AdBlock?

The shutdown of TPB is just another step towards the total internet take over by the government. The death of freedom online. It's coming, and the recent Sony Pictures hack will only motivate them more to completely destroy privacy and any true sense of personal security. Prepare to lose all your rights within this generation. We will all be forced to obey or be labeled "terrorists".

it's coming....

No, actually TPB is anarchy and you're stealing from content providers. Sure it's great to get all your content for free and on some level I even support it (if you happen to be a poor student etc.) but really, anyone who can afford it should support the artists and content providers they like.

I make my living on software sales, you think it would be fun to find out half your users are pirating your product and your family doesn't get butter on their bread?
