Prior to making some application changes we created a checkpoint while the server was powered off. After confirming that everything was working we removed the checkpoint (server was on) but the AVHD file was not removed. It did not show up under manage checkpoints anymore.

I read online that the server needs to be powered off before the checkpoint file will be removed. We powered off the server and the checkpoint file remained.

Is this typical behavior for Hyper-V?.

Yes, prior to Hyper-V 2012, a checkpoint file is not merged with the parent VHD until you power off the server.

The file may still be merging. Do you a see a progress indicator in Hyper-V Manager?

I didn't see any progress indicator which I also thought was odd. I've been managing VMware for years but have to support this hyper-v site as well now. Do not like...
