NVIDIA announced today that its NVIDIA® Tegra® mobile processor will power the new Honda Connect in-car audio and information system in the 2015 Honda Civic, Civic Tourer and CR-V, which will be launched in Europe next year. By integrating the Tegra automotive-grade processor, Honda becomes the 19th global automaker to utilize NVIDIA technology for in-vehicle infotainment applications. The announcement coincided with the first glimpse of these Honda models at the 2014 Mondial de l'Automobile (Paris Auto Show).

What is the purpose of this, other than to cause more deaths by distracted driving?

A car's job is to get you from Point A to Point B. Not to browse Facebook or post on twitter or take Instagram photos. Anything that doesn't involve transport is superfluous, adds needless complication (which means more things that can break and when they do, more expensive repairs), and adds more ways to distract the driver. In addition, touchscreens are dangerous because you do not have the ability to use them without looking the way you do a physical volume knob or radio button.

Would be nice for playing FLAC files with your app of choice but the controls need to be physical and large like the old days. I have a 2004 civic with 3 knobs...fan, temp, and vent position along with 3 buttons for recirc, defrost, and ac. Everything can be operated by touch without taking eyes off the road. Touch screens don't belong in cars. The entertainment HMI should have physical buttons flanking dynamic labels on the screen along with a rotary knob for volume and spring-return rocker for changing tracks/channels/fast forward. They should consult aircraft cockpit designers.

I want to find whoever coined the non-word "infotainment" and club him or her repeatedly with a dictionary.

Yay another "infotainment" system that you will be stuck with and not be able to easily upgrade.

While true, the same must also be extended to radios since that can also cause distractions. If you say that radios are useful (ie: news) then the same could also be said for these systems (ie. GPS that helps you safely and efficiently get from one place to another). Not saying that you're wrong but that there are positives and negatives to everything.
