We all know it isn't possible for Macs to get a virus or be exploited so these updates must be just a precautionary measure.

Apple has released updates for several of its products and, in addition to new features and functionality fixes, the company has also addressed several security issues that expose users to cyberattacks.

do macs self update or are their any network deployment options for admins? I havn't played with macs for about 5 years.

What is starting to hit Macs is scamware. Those same programs that claim to "make your PC faster" or "make the web faster" or "make you magic money" or "update your drivers" or "cure all illness and create world peace" (I may have made that last one up). Snake Oil software.

I have had half a dozen Apple Macs in the last six months with some form of scamware on it. Just like in the Windows world, these are usually used by Teenagers who click on anything.

Many Apple Mac users are like many Windows users. They don't know what should and shouldn't be on the computer so just tend to click "YES" to everything. Whacking in security password (Keychain or UAC) when asked.

You can try changing the OS, but you can't change the average user.

Untill now they've got away with it though since the existence of attacks is near zero and Apple has silently patched the few attacks that were made.

The best way to get infected is to use warez, works with OSX and Windows alike.

[H] must get some decent traffic from all this Apple clickbaiting.

I haven't had a virus on anything in 10 years. At work they are uncommon (8k+ computers ) we get about 10 viruses a year...about 80%windows 20% mac... and that's a similar ratio to how mant we have. Over half the machines are redhat/debian...those never get anything.

These infected laptops didn't even have warez. It was just pure scamware. Acquired through Google searches. And a mixture of clients from arrogant teens through to retired people.

There are a number of companies who supply "free games" which then run on screen with advert banners around with these scary messages. Often the advert claims your computer is infected, so the user clicks the advert, and proceeds to infect themselves.

I have such a wide client base that it makes it an interesting study in seeing who does and does not pick up viruses. It is all about risk, knowledge and common sense. The worst people for infections are: teenager\20somethings and their "free you tube to mp3 converters" and single blokes in their 50s using Google to find free porn and sport.
