It looks like game developers are getting fed up with all this crap too. Thanks to Grimspoon for the heads up.

What started as a relatively minor dispute regarding whether the gaming media was choosing who and what to cover based on pull rather than merit has become a massive, cross industry conflict that shows no sign of decreasing. Two sides: #GamerGate and its opponents (anti-#GamerGate?).

Wow, I did not even know this was going on, guess I have other things to do than get my panties all up in a bunch. :D Oh well, I am glad I have my XBox 360 XBox One, XBox Original and my gaming PC and work PC that I could game on. (When I am not working, of course.)

Oh, and I am ALIVE! :)

Insert Windows 8, cars and other stuff in place of a tweet. Same thing, different day. :)

I'd completely agree with you except that you cleverly hid an actual problem among the insignificant stuff. I mean really, what operating system other people use on their computers gets me so angry that I have to rant incessantly online anytime someone mentions it.

Really though, the amount of attention this is getting makes the people that freak out about celeb news look almost normal by comparison.

This whole thing has gotten way out of hand on both sides. If it goes on too much longer it will only hurt both sides. Gamers will look like whiney vengeful jerks, and gaming journalists will look incompetent and loose the faith of their "dead" audience. There isn't a way to win this one. Sadly I am not sure there is a good way to retreat either.

I guess I will just have to do my best to play games and stay out of it.

I've never even heard of it. Am I the only one that doesn't bother with "mainstream" gaming sites?

Somehow I don't have any problem getting as much info as I want without resorting to reading the big boys in gaming media.

This type of crap has been around as long as gaming mags have. It's part of the reason I quite reading mass periodic gaming publications over a decade ago.

There is an easy way to "win" this. Both sides implode and the entire bullshit industry goes away.

If you look into the background on this whole thing, it seems like the Quin lady is a scam artist.

True. But sadly if that happens they will make us all look bad in the process. Luckily for me there are a lot of good games coming out right now, so it will be easy for me to keep my head down and enjoy my hobby.

I still need to dig in to Wasteland 2 now that it is out of beta.

So.... you traded in your violent video game for ice cream?

I was referring to games journalism. But I am considering buying a 100 pack of blank CDs and writing call of duty on them to trade in for ice cream.

There is an earlier article he published with a comment in the forum regarding the subject that explains exactly why people are upset and why, if you're a gamer, you should care and take notice.

Another good post detailing the DiGRA and their agenda.

Why?

You say that if I am a gamer I should care about any of this crap, why? Why should I, as a gamer for over 30 years, give one rat's ass what any of these people think?

I don't read game mags anymore, or articles about games even. All I do is play what I am playing and occasionally look for a new game that might be good enough to take me on a new road. Word of mouth generally does that for me just fine.

And so, if I don't need or care about gaming journalists, then why should I care about those that are pissed off at them?

I don't see that I have any dogs in this fight.

I don't see developers deciding not to produce games anymore.

So why?

Will this shit die already?

I thought this was over long ago too. It's gotten kinda boring with the exception of the lunatics that are stalking the women to the point that the FBI had to be called in. Everyone else is just hurling insults.

I can absolutely say without a doubt that this is nothing in the blip of the media as a whole in terms of news coverage.

Certainly nothing compared to the average gossip about some celebs. I can't even imagine a logical comparison between them honestly.

Hearing about Pair Hilton or Lindsey Lohan for years on end is far and away much worse.

This whole controversy has been around for about a month and a week.

Damn, this GamerGate shit is becoming stuff from the tabloids. All the bickering and BS that comes with it. When did gamers become such bitches? It went from talking about games to whos fucking who. Soon, there will be a sex tape leak with Gabe Newell and some journalist chick and having John Carmacks alien baby and they become friends with bat boy (Elvis' love child with Renee Zelwegger)... It's getting way too US Magazine BS and Star Magazine.

Yes, gaming journalists promote certain things more than others, and push certain things more than others (even giving higher ratings or not reviewing certain games or whatever). Welcome to journalism. It's rare to find the one gem that does a great job.

You do know that all of this stuff about ethics in journalism is a massive coverup to conceal the true goal of #GamerGate, which is to force women out of gaming through harassment and assault?

I dont comprehend what gamers gate is.

Neither do I, honestly.

One side is upset that there is corruption in this world. *Gasp!* Who would've guessed??!

And the other are... what? Saying the exact opposite so "refute" claims by one side so they can have the moral high ground?

:confused::confused:

If you read the content of the posts I linked you'll see that these people are actively getting changes made to games and destroying careers in the process. This is just a sampling of what has been happening in the past couple of years. Leigh Alexander actually makes it her business to threaten any commenters on Twitter that she can destroy them and brags about having done so in the past. You may not care about gaming "journalism" as I do, but these extremists are actively tearing at the industry in more ways than one. You should care because it goes to the heart of creativity and will continue to affect the content we see in video games now and in the future.

I dont comprehend what gamers gate is.

Gamers found out gaming journalists were purposefully not reporting, selectively reporting, or reporting with pre-agreed bias on gaming stories. It came out, by her ex, a female game dev may have gotten special/overly positive reporting on her game because she was banging a journalist.

Pretty much the same shit the other media does and we turn a blind eye. The press will side with who they are in a relationship with.

The claim about the dev was not proven but story was already out.

When gamers started to call BS on the lack of ethics in gaming journalism and call the naughty dev out, several journalists/bloggers/"activists" rallied with the battle cry that complaining gamers were being misogynists.

Add complaints of real/fake trolling and other typical childish antics on twitter and you get gamergate.

Activists/bloggers are attempting to turn it into this movement about racism/sexism in gaming as opposed to what it was; twitter, white knight, and hashtag activism nonsense at its finest.

I stopped associating with the gaming crowd sometime around 2006. There is way too much vile, spiteful hatred and bigotry from both sides of the crowd. Even the so-called "enlightened" crowd, the guys I agreed with early early on in the game, are now just as spiteful and ignorant as the mouthbreather basement dwellers.

I'll just sit back and enjoy a game or two now and then with my popcorn and watch the whole culture implode and fracture. The gaming culture will be like Fallout/Wasteland when this is all over...how appropriate!

The claim about the dev was not proven but story was already out.

If you're talking about the dev banging gaming journalists... it has been proven, or at least admitted to, by one of the journalist. Nathan Grayson, I believe was the name. He said the relationship started a day after he posted his "article" so there wasn't any problems.

Also love how some people are basically dismissing corruption because it happens everywhere, btw. Just because it's everywhere, doesn't mean it should be ignored, when evidence comes out, and it has come out.

You do know that all of this stuff about ethics in journalism is a massive coverup to conceal the true goal of #GamerGate, which is to force women out of gaming through harassment and assault?

Or that is the reaction to people in the gaming journalism community who are trying to force gaming to become something that doesn't tweak their feminist socialist feathers.

lol great timing!

Nothing that can't be fixed with a law suit. Not my problem. I don't need them and you know what, no one needs them. They are a luxury, part of the marketing machine, but they are not needed.

As for how it will effect the future, we, the gamers, effect the future. Every dollar spent on a new title, an indie development, DLC, a monthly subscription, that's what shapes the future and it's the only thing that shapes the future because those dollars are the only thing of value in the realm, as it should be. We vote with our dollars and the businesses that want those dollars are smart enough to remember it, or they will serve as warming to others lest they forget.

It's all about the Benjamen's and anyone who thinks otherwise is mistaken.

Besides, if I can't get enough cleavage from WoW2 then I can always grab some Japanese Anime ghetto crap, they sure as hell aren't going to stop putting out sexist shit just because some morally challenged sluts in the US are pissed because their workmates make them hang a curtain on their cubicle so they don't have to look at their man-calves.

#gamergate sums up to this:

1. tweets made people butthurt.
2. those people decided that this 1st world problem requires vehement hate to be used.
3. no one really cares what the core problem is anymore because the grenades of tertiary targets are being lobbed.
4. ignore it and just play.

Once the fall season starts, and there are a ton of good game to play most people will hopefully get to #4.

It's less about the amount of time and more about the level of crazeh-emo-moose response the entire thing has gotten so far. Celeb stuff is generally like a tame gossip kinda thing among people. This is a "ur geh" and "no u" thing between people with not the slightest bit of self control.

I hadn't even looked at this until today. But regardless of the realities of the facts presented by both sides, everyone has to pretty much agree that shitting all over your customers is pretty much the worst possible thing you can do. That is generally bad business, but even worse when you are in an industry where your customers have a deep mistrust of you to begin with.

So, you're saying that you're "okay" with some asshole who never met you to characterize you, by association, as some violent, racist, misogynist parental-basement-dwelling fapper with no social skills and even fewer hygiene skills? That it's pretty much okay for them to publish this sort of crap to the world as "fact"?

Even ignoring the part about not consuming information about games because you're too busy playing them, which I feel is an exaggeration, if not wholly implausible.

I thought the sjw's from the review blogs and a few scammers/feminists were trying to force a round peg into a square hole. Gamersgate, ouside of the radical fringe, are just pushing back against it.
