alot better and easier to keep all together and remove all less related bs from the topic.. dosnt matter if there is gonna be 10 tib drives in the future.. then buy 10 of those and stop cryin about it.. then u gonna have <100 tib space and there isnt any topic that is gonna change it..

Yes, but don't put a size limit. Put a spindle limit. Minimum of 10 drives or something like that! No softcore nerd pron here!

agree on spindle count vs storage space, makes the thread more future proof

I think there still should be a minimum drive size. I mean last year I spent some time testing a new server with 20 or so 250 GB SATA I drives (before the real drives arrived). 5TB wow! :)

Drive count, 20 min, not raw space.
I wouldn't put the limit so high. You'd miss out on a lot of cool hardware. Supermicro's 3U solutions only held 15 drives until recently. My old 4U was a 12-drive chassis. The old rackable and SGI stuff, NetApp, HP... All of which could use modern drives.

10 drives is a great place to put the minimum. It's large enough that a person would need to really stuff their desktop computer (which looks cool), and small enough that you can get some nifty enterprise-grade hardware. (2U 12-drive anyone?)

10TB barrier to entry is too low nowadays, IMO. Also agree with spindle counts comments.

So those of us with 10 ssds in raid won't qualify since they don't have spindles?

Plenty of precedent there.

In these forums we have the "20xx show off your rig" threads and "a picture I took 20xx edition", etc. etc. Why not an annual refresh on the storage showoff thread?

I do have one major suggestion though:

Ban the lazy, retarded maggots who keep quoting with images!

Make it a minimum drive count of ~8. The 1U Supermicro box I just ordered will hold 12 to replace the 26 2TB drives in my current server. The goal for next year is sub 4 digit power bills.

Yikes!

You have an aluminum plant in your basement or something?

Can't even imagine 4 digit power bills. We are considering our ~$120 per month bills in the summer too high.

Also, I would make the minimum drive count 6 instead, or you are excluding the most recommended 6 drive RAIDz2 setup.

As i posted before in the main 10TB thread, the problem wont be solved by creating a new "showoff thread" but by getting people use the existing one correctly.

Here is a perfect example: http://hardforum.com/showpost.php?p=1041108743&postcount=2365

Oh Boy, yet another large image of a cardboard box containing hard drives .. No one has ever posted that in the thread before. At least he didn't buy them "retail" and take a picture of the shipping box containing all the retail boxes like this guy did : http://hardforum.com/showpost.php?p=1040818531&postcount=2245

Someone clearly likes his box of boxes and quotes the image again http://hardforum.com/showpost.php?p=1040840723&postcount=2264

Not sure why people feel a need to quote the images.

Occasionally you hit some good info on these threads, but most of the time it is just people showing off their high-res digital camera by taking pictures of nonsense.

PS - Can we get rid of the "WORK" Equipment, like this : http://hardforum.com/showpost.php?p=1039727672&postcount=1953

The tread is "Post your 10+ TB system" not "post the stuff you work on but don't own" thread.
