Normally we'd make fun of Apple for something like this but, at least in this case, we just want to say "Thanks!" :D

It’s believed that the images were stolen by exploiting a glitch in Apple’s Find My iPhone service for people looking to track or shut down their lost devices. Normally, an iPhone user’s account would be locked out after a few failed password attempts, but the glitch allowed a remote hacker to run through multiple passwords until finding the one that unlocked the account.

Don't take nude pictures with your phone if you don't want them stolen. If you're a celebrity shouldn't you be able to afford a decent DSLR? :p

Or more correctly, to reduce the chance, don't take the pictures with something with a network connection, and don't store them in the cloud.

It's funny how the FBI will get involved with celebrities but not for normal people when this occurs on a daily basis.

Some people are more equal than others... apparently.

seriously what the fuck were they thinking when they took the pictures... its entirely their fault if it happened.

humility lesson uh?

I think a lot of people, mostly men, have been "investigating" this incident.

I'd say the problem here is our obsession with nudity. You create this aura around these women and their sexuality, using every possible camera trick for maximum cocktease, so of course there will be a massive effort by everyone to get things like this.

And for what? A couple of boobs and some ass? The upside of this for JenLaw is that now there will be a lot less interest in seeing her nude.

If everyone was naked, then the value of nudity would plummet.

We would be too busy cleaning up the vomit from seeing all the people naked that we should never see naked ... what once was seen cannot be unseen  :D

Hmmmm. I'll need to see the evidence before I make a judgement call on this very pressing issue.

There were a bunch of nudes of girls from my highschool leaked in my junior year. The police got involved and I am pretty sure the FBI did as well since the website in question hosted nudes from girls all over the country. They do get involved.

Just dont take a picture of you naked and store it in a Cloud.

geez

So if someone breaks into your house, takes your keys, and steals your car, it's your fault for leaving the keys just laying around in your house?

Funny how that works, huh? I was thinking the same thing. No imminent danger, no physical harm and/or no immediate national danger. I, too, find it interesting how the FBI chooses to spend our tax dollars.

Or more correctly, to reduce the chance, don't take the pictures with something with a network connection, and don't store them in the cloud.

And yet CNN deems to throw up an op-ed about how the full blame lies with the hackers. Sure, it was illegal - I don't think anyone is debating that, however why are all these people taking nude selfies of themselves so much? Especially one connected to the cloud. From what I understand Kate Upton had a slew of them get posted, but, then again, she isn't that intelligent I believe. She's one of the lucky ladies who God graced with some very nice curves.

its entirely their fault if it happened.

If a child gets hit by a car while crossing the street at a crosswalk it's the kid's fault it happened - they should have never been in the street...

If I have my wallet stolen it's my fault - I should have never had anything valuable in my wallet...

ok... i guess we allllll have naked pictures of ourselves on a cloud service.

I guess you are saying celebrities are like children?

I am going to assume they most likely sent these photos to someone in a text, and how many times do those stay private? If you don't want to have private pictures spread around, don't send them/upload them to the internet.

Although not taking pictures is good advice it doesn't excuse the person who willfully and intentionally stole those images ... if I leave the trunk of my car open while I am unloading bags that doesn't excuse the person who decides to take something out of my trunk ... although we can't leave our door open or unlocked for a variety of reasons these days, it shouldn't be because if we do we are "asking for it" and anything that happens because of it is our fault and not that of the criminal who took advantage of the situation ;)

That may be be linked to child pornography though which, rightly, is utterly disgusting and very criminal. While these were not consenting they were adults. I think the scale has something to do with how quickly the FBI got involved, but had these been normal people there definitely wouldn't have been near as much movement on it I feel.

The law is finally working to correct this in the sense that girls posting or distributing nudes of themselves, underage, are being charged with distributing child pornography if those images are available to a wider audience than intended. Regardless of whether it was by accident or on purpose. We live in very difficult times where things are no longer so white and black. The Internet and Technology has complicated our lives just as much as its made them easier.

The whole thing is a mess. Truly, one girl looks a lot like any other girl, within reason, and frankly, girls outnumber men on this planet still, don't they? This whole thing is stupid, but let's narrow it down to a few things...
Someone invaded someone else's privacy. This is wrong and should be handled carefully.
Women should be proud of their bodies, so hopefully they won't feel negatively about this issue. However, they WERE trespassed upon, so they have a solid reason to be angry and to take steps and press charges, etc.

Luckily all of them are rather pretty, so hopefully they are still treated with respect by the public. After all, they likely wouldn't be in the positions they are in without being pretty. This, however, in NO WAY invalidates their feelings in this matter. Frankly, the person.people who did this screwed up big time.

AND, everyone should have the ability to safely and securely take pictures and store them.

Perhaps that's because it fell under the umbrella of "distribution of lewd acts/images of minors" ?? Now if you said that about some college (adult) coeds who got images leaked then your view of "they do get involved" would hold a bit more merit.

I guess you are saying celebrities are like children?

I would say there are a lot of children more mature and ready to deal with life then a good chunk of celebrities.

Most 10 year olds know that sharing a secret with someone (even if they "promise not to tell anyone") dramatically increases your chance of just that happening.

in certain countries in this world, this would be no big deal to anyone assuming they are of legal age but in the USA, nudity is still so frigging taboo and 'dirty' it is sad.

While I agree whoever did this should be punished to the full extent of the law, when are these celebrities going to learn? They have to know they're a target for this kind of thing and take precautions.

I feel the best way to combat this is if all celebrities just release all nudes photos of themselves as a pre-emptive strike against these 'hackers'.

... nudity is still so frigging taboo and 'dirty' it is sad.

True. It's becoming a big deal, and many are worried about their career and reputation. Sad that nude photos could break a career... :/ Since I can guarantee many others have been naked. Some even had sex. Yet, it's so taboo that when a stolen nude picture can destroy their career or reputation (or create it as in the Kardashian case).

Personally, I'm more interested in how they act after the leak. Do they get pissed? Do they accept it (pics are already out, there is no getting them off the web-ask Beyonce)?

religious extremists (not just christians) and people with "moral superiority" complexes.

exactly my point , but worded better...

I read about this some yesterday as it was happening. Turns out most of the people around the net were referring to it as "the fappening" :D

It isn't right that someone stole their photos from the cloud. But as a celebrity, why do you have nude photo's stored in the cloud? You'd think they would know better. But maybe they think the cloud is really somewhere up in the sky and no one can reach it....

So if someone breaks into your house, takes your keys, and steals your car, it's your fault for leaving the keys just laying around in your house?
The hackers broke into iCloud, not the phones directly.
This situation is more akin to giving a set of keys and car to a parking garage with several other high dollar cars while maintaining very poor security. The garage is going to get broken into eventually.

Breaking into iCloud doesn't make the thieves in the right, but it also does not make the victims look any less stupid or make anyone feel sorry for them.

I love how they pretend this is a big deal. These women are paid FORTUNES to be sex symbols and shake their butts and boobies on camera for millions. Many of them already show their boobs in movies all the time. I wish they'd just admit what's really at stake here... LOST $$$. They were always planning to show everyone their boobs, they just wanted to wait until no one paid attention to their teasing anymore, and then in a last desperate bid for attention they go nude on camera or Playboy for money.

In any case, we need to update this song now:

I wish we could make a distinction between an 8 year old and a 17 year old, as this is getting a bit ridiculous. Angela Zhang created a new nano-particle that kills cancer and won $100K for it recently. Surely she can make up her mind as to whether or not she wants to show her boobs. BTW, if you find this girl attractive, you're a pedophile because she's 16 years old. And if she bought you a drink at the bar, you would be UTTERLY DISGUSTED. GROSS!

Not to say that you would, but to act like you're sick for thinking "mmm perky boobs" is a lie only your girlfriend will believe, as you don't suddenly sexually mature on your 18th birthday.

Of course it was wrong to hack their accounts and release their private photos. I don't think anyone is seriously disputing that, but it is hard to sympathize with people that don't take the most basic precautions to prevent themselves from being victimized. In a perfect world we wouldn't need to lock our doors, password protect our digital assets, or store our money in secure locations. But we don't live in a perfect world. In the real world we need to do all those things and more. It should be obvious that once you upload something to the Internet, whether it is your facebook account or "the cloud", it is now potentially public, whether that was your intent or not. Use heavy encryption (before uploading) if you want to protect that data, or don't upload it. If you don't think that is important then may I suggest you leave your doors unlocked and money hanging out of your pockets. At least you'd be consistent then.

So if someone breaks into your house, takes your keys, and steals your car, it's your fault for leaving the keys just laying around in your house?

Storing nude pictures in the cloud (or on your phone) is like leaving your car keys sitting on the seat of your car. Eventually someone will take advantage of the situation.
