Damn, I was really hoping it was going to be aliens moving the rocks. :(

During winter 2013-2014, members of our group were present while the playa was flooded and frozen. A steady wind drag moved the thin ice sheets covering the playa’s south end, and these sheets pushed the rocks along, creating the characteristic furrows in the playa’s muddy surface.

A friend of a friend uses the path created by one such "sailing stones" as his "signature trademark" symbol for his fine art photography.

I think this might be the first time they filmed it? I've seen the theory for years on shows but never seen any kind of footage. Took them long enough to get around to putting a camera out there.

My thoughts exactly! This question has been around for a long time yet I've not heard anyone say "Hey, lets put a time lapse camera there and see what happens".
