GOG announced today that it is now offering DRM-free movies for $5.99 each. There isn't much in the way of movies just yet but the company promises more movies each week.

More and more users start to expect and demand the digital content they paid for to be free from any kind of restrictive mechanisms that limit access to their collections and get in the way of enjoyment. We think this is a good time to take the next step in our quest to make digital entertainment better for everyone. Today we set out to spread our DRM-Free ideas across the movie industry! That's right: GOG.com now offers DRM-Free movies.

They will probably be selling indie movies mostly, not those MPAA stuff.

I'm not sure if I would pay $6 for any of these movies currently available though.

There is no way this can go over well with the MPAA

No commercial site would be selling movies they aren't authorized to sell ... the MPAA can't care because there is nothing illegal here (assuming they are authorized to sell the movies they are selling ... a good assumption) ;)

Good on them for trying, but its not going to go anywhere. Unfortunately, taking free public domain documentaries already available at Youtube/Netflix, making them available as a downloadable file and then advertising it as "DRM-free movies" is kind of a joke.
