Been throwing around the idea to build a HTPC for awhile now. I will be using XBMC. What do you think of the build?

I haven't included a optical drive or storage drive or any peripherals because I already have them.

What are your goals with this. Just playback of media from a server, from local drives? Do you want it to do transcoding?

For just playback, there are cheaper options. e.g. http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1829095

Its going to have a 2TB external Hard Drive plugged into it on a home network so it will be playing movies from the HDD and steaming through the internet. I might use it to play arcade emulators or some low system requirement games. Also, I am trying to keep it under 200$.

That PSU wattage is crazy overkill, but for the price may as well go big I guess.

What do you think? A 300watt? I'll try to find something around the same price

Another reason why I like that one is because of the flat cables and its semi modular. I want to try and make route the cables inside the machine as best I can to maximize air flow. I may have a problem with this motherboard, apparently this one doesnt have usb 3.0 headers.

For under $200, I'd just get an Intel NUC or one of the Gigabyte equivalents.

If you have a Microcenter around you could look at the amd motherboard bundles, get a a8 6400k and Gigabyte GA88x itx board for $120 ish, I think you would see a pretty good improvement with performance as I am not sure on the am1 chips. If you do go AM1 you might look at the openelec XBMC linux distro to get a little more performance out of the machine. I would like to play around with one of the chrome boxes and side load linux on it as a personal project :)
