Hey guys, so my old WD 640 GB Black is slowly dying, and I'm looking for a 1TB replacement that performs the same as my old 640. Any suggestions? It is primarily for storage, but there are a few games that don't fit on my OS SSD so I'd like to keep it as snappy as possible.

I have read that there are access time issues with the new 1TB WD1003FZEX models, are there any other alternatives that I should look out for?

For storage, I'd simply get whatever brand/model that you prefer that is cheapest.

Then get another SSD for your games. A 128GB is $60

Likely work out to about the same price as a WD Black.

That is easy to perform better than your old drive. The 640 black with 2 x 320 GB platters is not really a match for single platter 1TB drives of the last 2 or so years.

It's not 1TB (it's 2TB) but I was very impressed with it:

Seagate Barracuda ST2000DM001

About 180MB/sec read/writes on a recent build.

I have a 640 Black and two 1TB Blues (EZEX).

The Blue seems a little bit snappier, but it could be a placebo.

I'd recommend the Blues to you if you only need a 1TB.

Thanks guys, I think I will just go ahead with the WD1003FZEX and see how it goes, I can always return it if it sucks ;-)
