It can go where no cellphone has gone before (other than a Sat phone, of course). A new startup company, based out of Brooklyn, has developed a solution to out-of-the-way cellphone communications at a reasonable price. Named the GoTenna, the device can link your cellphone to a network up to 50 miles away.

GoTenna, a Brooklyn-based hardware startup, has a modified, smartphone app-based approach to staying in touch at a lower cost when cell service is shaky, no satellite connection required.

Doesn't create a cell network, it only allows you to connect to one other user also using the dongle with their phone (FCC Regulations prevent them from using it to make a mesh network). They do have plans to enable a remote device (without cell coverage) to connect to the cell network using another user as a forwarder, but that's not implemented yet. Oh, and price listed is for a pair of devices, not just for one.

Not exactly an original concept. However, phone's are notorious for their battery drain and their ability to break. It would make more sense to buy a rugged handheld radio.

PK, if you're at a loud event, a radio isn't useful, but texting is. Nevertheless, unless it can connect you to a cell network, it's usefulness is limited, unless everyone has one.

The price on preorder isn't too bad, but 300 bucks is way more than I'd pay for 2 of these.

Wasn't this posted here a few days ago? What happened to the original thread?

Lotta tech babble to say they can "walkie-talkie"ize your smartphone.
