Because the government does such a great job running everything else (into the ground), let's hand over Google and Amazon to them as well.

They’re huge, they’re ruthless, and they touch every aspect of our daily lives. Corporations like Amazon and Google keep expanding their reach and their power. Despite a history of abuses, so far the Justice Department has declined to take antitrust actions against them. But there’s another solution. Is it time to manage and regulate these companies as public utilities?

The turds at Ars will be all about this plan... what could POSSIBLY go wrong????

What amazes me how the youth of today are all about Ron Paul and so called "freedom" but seem to think bigger government is freedom or something. Saw something the other day about most millennials saying they are socialist but almost half of them do not know what Socialism is. It's amazing how horribly ignorant people are today.

Why does everyone want to make things public utilities ... don't people generally hate public utilities currently (Water, Gas, Power, Trash, Sewer, etc) ... besides I don't agree that Amazon and Google behave in an inappropriate manner but if they did that is why we have anti-trust laws ;)

The problem is that even if they were breaking the law, our government and law-enforcement entities would have to enforce those laws. The law in general means nothing to our Government as should be obvious the last 6 years.

What a dumb idea.

Since someone mentioned Ars (which I don't think was a valid criticism linking it to this op-ed), it's sad how awful its become. It's like the goofiest of reason.com + the lamest of wired.com. It used to be such a great web site.

It is more than just the young people using the word Socialism without know the meaning. Go to a tea-bagger rally. They shout it left, right, up, down, and side to side with out having any inclination of the meaning. Only because it is a word talking heads say a lot, so they repeat it.

They can start by busting up the cable monopoly, and maybe after that we can talk about Amazon and Goog. Since the former won't happen, the latter is nothing to worry about.

John Doe does not know what socialism is. They think it's comunism, as in the sense of soviets and bolsheviks.

The fact that you used the term "tea-bagger" puts you squarely in their ranks. Congrats, Ars awaits your wisdom.

Makes sense. Big companies are bad because they're run by people and people are greedy and dishonest, but big government is good because its run by people and people are generous and trustworthy.

Yeah, no. But the government does need to actually implement their anti-trust powers.

"Big Tech’s use of public technology means that it operates in a technological “commons,” which they are using solely for its own gain, without regard for the public interest. Meanwhile the United States government devotes considerable taxpayer resource to protecting them – from patent infringement, cyberterrorism and other external threats."

Very next header:
Big Tech’s services have become a necessity in modern society.

Let's keep the government out of the "monopoly busting" business ... the last time the government broke up a monopoly (the original AT&T) they created the Telecos we have now ... not a sterling recommendation for their abilities here ... besides, monopolies aren't illegal, only abusing the power of a monopoly is illegal (and that is what is usually punished) ... the last thing we need is for the government (or some drug addled anti corporation person) to decide we need to break up Microsoft, Intel, Comcast, Verizon, AT&T, Netflix, or any of the other myriad monopolies we have in various markets

Yes YES please Yes!!! The reasons for doing this vastly outweigh the reasons for not doing it.

Oh look, a deep thinker using such profound insults like "tea-bagger." I'd put you into the category of ignorant or maybe just stupid considering how you know nothing about the tea party.

I just want google fiber in Oklahoma City. I can live with the crocks in DC

Dumb. Unlike things such as, say, Comcast, I can pick and choose search engines and online retailers. Certain aspects of Amazon, mainly books, may certainly start to pick up on the anti-trust radar. But nationalizing them? Ridiculous.

Salon is a far left-wing site that supports big government and statism. You should have seen their idiotic article the other day about how professional wrestling is racism.

an insult? as I recall the tea-baggers called themselves tea-baggers. Now they don't like at cry like you are? hah

One of many articles about it, here is one. Also a search with google images comes up with a lot of rallies with people using the term.

They have some good original articles, but yeah, a lot of it is just too far left.

Replace "Google" and "Amazon" with NSA.
Then the article would be spot on. :p

Another commie article by a commie website. So what? Nothing to see here folks. Move along...

Well this just proves you don't know what you are talking about. No Conservative or Tea party member ever referred to themselves as "tea-baggers." It's an insult that I first heard by Keith Olbermanm but I doubt he came up with it.

I like that blog link to a progressive activist as your proof. You are foolish.

I like this quote from the article,

Big Tech’s services have become a necessity in modern society.

Businesses would be unable to participate in modern society without access to the services companies like Amazon, Google and Facebook provide. These services have become public marketplaces.

For individuals, these entities have become the public square where social interactions take place, as well as the marketplace where they purchase goods.

Business can't participate in the marketplace without Facebook or Amazon  ... WHAT THE HELL are they smoking and why aren't they sharing :p

Pretty much. You're either a "socialist commie" (no difference to the uninformed) or American. That's what it seems like. Not all socialist ideas are bad, just as not all capitalist ideas are bad. I think a state must strike a healthy balance between the two.

When you have 100% of one thing or another, it tends to be abused. Look at Britian. They seem to do fine with nationalized utilities (power, etc) and healthcare. But also have a thriving free market sector.

Ok, so you are calling half of Millennials ignorant for not getting their facts straight, yet you yourself do not remember your own source, nor the exact percentages and, despite that, are drawing some conclusion from it. Sadly, ignorance transcends generations.

Note that only one of the USA utilities are nationalized (TVA) ... all of our other utilities are locally or regionally controlled monopolies but there are few nationalized industries left in the USA (AMTRAK and TSA are about the only ones left, besides Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac)

Define fine? They have poor quality healthcare service with unusually long wait times for specialists, and regarding utilities, they cost a fortune. Just as an example, I pay 7.8 cents per KWH right now, compared to the 18.8 cents per KWH the British pay. People right now are hoping that the brief economic rebound will stay, since they were on the brink of a triple-dip recession earlier in 2013. Average unemployment rate in the EU was also a whopping 12%, and they are suffering unusually high crime rates.

I assure you they have at least a vague understanding of the word. You reply makes me suspect you have less of an understanding than they...

Poor quality healthcare? High unemployment and crime rates? What is the imaginary England in your head like? Are there dragons?

If you were really interested in my attempt to recall, you would have done a simple google search for millenials and socialist and would have found the result. But be honest (maybe for the first time as a leftist) you don't care about the information. You only wanted to attack me and call me "ignorant" because I didn't do a simple google search for you and because you disagree with me politically. You just might be the definition of a low-information-voter.

Conservatives spend the better part of a decade calling everyone who doesn't eat babies and burn puppies a communist and you're surprised that millenials a) identify with not eating babies and burning puppies and b) don't know what the word means? How often is it used correctly in our public discourse?
