IBM is a very old technology company, but that fact doesn't stand in the way of forward thinking. IBM is investing $3 Billion dollars over the next five years to explore and develop computers that mimic human brain functions: a cognitive computer.

Silicon design has stalled and the ability to shrink chips is reaching its limit. IBM is looking at graphene, carbon nanotubes and other materials to replace silicon in computers, and will try to develop chips that can be scaled down to the atomic level.

Well, they're off to a good start with Watson.
Wasn't Intel's R&D trying something with carbon nanotubes and another design with lasers?

Interesting, I'm glad they're willing to think forward.

Nanotubes are a fascinating discovery. The PBS Nova episodes called "Making Stuff" (specifically Smaller, and Stronger have nanotube tech) and "Making More Stuff" highlight the tech in development. The host is annoying at first, but he grows on you as he's quite funny in his own way.

i have insider info that ibm is currently developing a jump to 7nm mfr process and will be first to market with the jump.
