last time I posted here was 9 years ago! Jeez, I feel old :(

I was hoping, you lot could help me here. Since there is a fantastic amount of information about monitors here..

I now WFH, so I want a 3 monitor setup. I already have a U3011, but I would like to get some wing monitors for it, in portrait mode.

I went out and bought a (1, a future second coming later maybe) U2713H, which is a really fantastic monitor. However, I feel that, it just isn't going to work. The screen is very tall when in portrait mode, I'm having to tilt my neck far too much to look at it. It also doesn't really look right along side the u3011.

But, I am not sure what to return it for. I was thinking of getting 2 x U2414H, due to having a really thin bezel. Also, because they are DP 1.2, which supports MST. I am however, a bit put off because I have read a lot of issues about the U2414H, and I am not a great fan on 16:9 and 1920x1080. I have got a bit spoilt with 2560x1600/1400 resolutions.

Do I get 2 x U2414H for wings for u3011? I guess PLP gaming is still out of the question? Are they U2414H problematic? Any other suggestions?

Thanks

Would it be worth considering one of the new 21:9 34" models instead of 2 additional side panels. I do understand that there are good deal of reasons to want separate side panels. Just throwing into you sift of ideas. By the time you found 2 side panels and configured, you might well be looking at a good portion of the cost of a 21:9. Still would be more money, but might get you more of what you are after in width real estate.

thanks for the reply.

Personally I really don't like those wide 21:9 screens. Even looking at them looks wrong. But thanks for the suggestion

I have 3 of them and it's not as bad as you think. It's actually pretty amazing. I'm just in the side grade mood and am thinkng about trying out a 21:9

if I got 2 x U2414H, which is what I am thinking of doing. Is PLP doable?

The best match for your U3011 is a pair of Dell 2001FP's or 2007FP's, they are 20" 1600x1200 and are almost a perfect PPI match for the U3011. They are the ultimate PLP match, the famous 20-30-20. PLP is only an issue if you game in Eyefinity/nVSurround. The stands support rotation so you won't have to buy new mounts to go with the monitors. Check this post for a visual comparison between 3x30" and 20-30-20 PLP (the PLP uses 2007FP but the center monitor is actually a 27"):

Used 2001FP/2007FP are quite cheap, typically $50. I got no less than 6 2001FP's for free from a place throwing them out (they were switching to 24" 1080p monitors).

thanks for the useful reply rtangwai.

2001FP/2007FP are just too small for me. I have seen many pictures of u3011's with 2007FP. Yes it it is a perfect fit, but I cannot work with a 1600 resolution....

That thread you linked to, what make are model are those monitors he has in portrait mode?

You say, it only is a issue if you game with Eyefinity/nVSurround. There isn't anything else out there, which really sucks. I already signed the petition.

Currently, I am very tempted to order 2 x U2414H. Although, I do wish they were 1920x1200 :-(

Actually there are plenty of uses for PLP. A writer I know swears by it because a 1600x1200 in portrait can display an 8.5"x11" page perfectly at over 100% scaling. Music and video studios like the fact you can put secondary tools on wing monitors and leave the main screen as a blank canvas.

If you don't mind your monitor layout looking like a TIE fighter you can put the 24" in portrait flanking your 30":

The center monitor is actually a 29" but you get the idea. If you look carefully you can see the scaling problem as the 29" is 100PPI (same as a 30") while the 24" 1080p is 92PPI.

The petition is useless because with wider screens coming out and cheap 27" 1440p monitors nobody really cares about PLP. It's actually cheaper to go 27" LLL than 20-30-20 PLP. If you check the Eyefinity thread dfter and I had a long discussion about this. Besides, you can get the results you want by going to fullscreen windowed mode (if the game supports it). That assumes you don't have Crossfire (I believe SLI supports it with some limits like lower FPS). If they ever get windowed Crossfire working the PLP debate gets permanently ended.

Plus most the 30" monitors are easily out performed by most of the 180$ 23" IPS panels now.

Seems like a shame to pair superior U2414H's which have better colors, deeper blacks, less glow and and less grainy matte coating with the 3011. The U2713H is one of the worst and most expensive 1440p monitors, especially for multi-media and work which does not require a wide gamut monitor.

3x Asus VS24AHL's or BenQ BL2411PT's might be nice. Both are much better than any 30" under 2,000$ and have relatively slim bezels.

Also, it easy to obtain 3 good 27" 1440p monitors (Qnix QX2710 or X-Star DP2710) for under 1000$ which are far better than the 3011. Best 2560x1440 Monitors.

Simplest solution is to sell the 3011 and get 3 better monitors.
