Facebook has introduced another feature that you will immediately opt out of. :(

When we ask people about our ads, one of the top things they tell us is that they want to see ads that are more relevant to their interests. Today, we learn about your interests primarily from the things you do on Facebook, such as Pages you like. Starting soon in the US, we will also include information from some of the websites and apps you use. This is a type of interest-based advertising, and many companies already do this.

I opted out of ever joining Facebook. It's one of the few good choices I've made in my life.

Really? My response would've been "I don't like seeing ads. Period."

I deactivated my FB account a long time ago and have to admit that I am happier. I got so,tired of logging in only to see the same emo people on my list always whining, moaning, or posting useless stuff on my wall. I do not get the purpose today as it used to be a great way to find people.

It's still good for older family members. Let's face it - technology isn't their friend. But they can facebook. I keep it for that, but rarely use it otherwise.

Honestly, my favorite social communication method with friends is still the old school way. Big chain emails of stupidity that never seem to end :)

Okay, I'm still trying to see how either Zuckerberg or Facebook can be converted into 666. But this is pretty much right up there on the creepiness meter.

F'ing annoying this crap, I go to my regular hardware dealers website, stuff things in the basket to check out total price of stuff I would like, I then leave the website without buying anything, instantly I see google ads everywhere tailored with exactly those items, really, the whole basket as an add on every website I visit.

Bleh.

Yup, and here it is, also on the [H], my dealer, my basket. :(

like this wasnt happening before.. all ads on facebook are about things I've been looking up on internet..

This isn't just on Facebook but is on any page on any site that has a FB element (Like buttons, JS tracking nastiness & transparent images). Opting out & blocking cookies will not stop them tracking you.

At this point anyone who still uses Facebook really likes posting inane things on the internet. And this is coming from someone who just made this post.

Damn, I can't 'like' midget porn on FB because it shows up to my friends on my birthday. Now I can't shop for midget porn because FB tracks my ads and my coworkers will see it over my shoulder while I'm at work. I just can't win!

As a new-ish father, my wife and I use Facebook to let our families (who don't live near us) see pictures of our little one. We also use skype when time permits.

If you think that sharing family photos is inane, then I'm sorry. Blanket generalizations are bad.

Yea with as crappy as facebook is, it still does have its purpose.

Meh, I still use Facebook but most of the younger generation (high school and new grads) have moved to other platforms such as Instagram.

So basically, you stay out of Windows 8 threads, Xbox or PS4 threads, or any Microsoft related thread here then, right?

I like how they make it sound like it's a good thing.

I really don't care what ads I see. In fact I rather see all sorts of random ads than to see targeted ads and know it's a result of being spied on. What ever happened to the good ol' traditional ad systems where it was just rotated randomly?

Google still creeps me out way more than Facebook though. Facebook spies on you, on their own site. Google spies on you all over the internet and even in real life. (Google glass, partnerships through credit card companies to see your transactions, etc) Though I guess Facebook probably could be doing this too...

Facebook is only a small (and NEW) addition to cookie and behavioral based tracking Ad Serving ecosystem. If you look at the graph (FBX - Facebook Exchange) is only a small part of the huge ad serving platform that ALL of you here are exposed to everyday.

If you think Facebook is the only company that's out there collecting your personal information and destroying your little private life, you are gravely mistaken. In fact, facebook is LATE to the whole tracking party. Facebook used to use Ads Marketplace, where they use information from your profile to serve relevant ads. HOWEVER, it turns out that people's Facebook profiles are more of a "projection" of who a user wants to be rather than who they actually are. This interferes with ad relevancy. So to target users more precisely, Facebook introduced FBX, where they track you by using cookies and other behavioral patterns (which includes history).

The point I want to make is that Facebook is not the only company tracking you. I work with many agencies who track and collect data on cookies and IP addresses to serve Ads on a scale MUCH bigger than Facebook.

What I don't understand is why people care. This is not some evil gub'mint trying to use the data to decide who to round up when it's genocide time.

They are just trying to sell you products (which, surprise surprise, you live in a first world country so you are already BUYING BUCKETS OF PRODUCTS).

Why on Earth would anyone object to seeing advertisements that are more relevant to their interests? Less 'junk' mail, and instead getting fewer ads in the first place - but those that are far more targeted to you.

FWIW, I rather *like* Facebook ads. I've bought tickets to SEVERAL concerts and shows that I had no idea were coming through town...but Facebook knew I liked them, knew roughly where I lived, and did know they'd be in the area...so gave me an ad for them.

That's the kind of thing I WANT ads to be. Useless junk cluttering up my browser window? Annoying! Ads that are specifically for things I WOULD want, but didn't know about? Yes, please!

Yes I do! I have not been in either of those subforums for many months now. I pretty much just lurk these days as not much catches my interest anymore. I especially stay away from the ATI vs. nVidia threads.

This made me LOL.

I use FB, but it seems to be mostly fluff crap. I like it for friends and family not advertising and stupid games.

I keep a facebook page just to keep a presence on the internet. I often Google information on prospective new hires for my company, and if I dont find anything on them because they are effective off the grid, I get suspicious. In fact I probably dont hire them.

You're an a******. Glad I don't work for you. You sound like the government so you're probably a shitty person, too.

You probably haven't had to submit a resume in a while, or maybe not yet, but all employers google their applicants and make hiring decisions based on what they find. This has been going on for years. No need to get upset about it. It's standard practice.

And this is the reason I rooted my android and dug out everything Facebook.
Google already gives the NSA a nice gaping hole into my info, calls, browsing history and texts.
Apple does the same.
Don't need a 3rd party selling off my info, I'm being whored out enough!

No shit, however he said he doesn't hire people he can't find anything on. That's scumbag no matter how I look at it.

Indeed. I think he just wants to have dirt on people for blackmailing purposes.

Earlier this year we received 88 highly qualified applicants which made it through the first screening for two positions we needed to fill. No one has the time to look through that pile, so you weed people out for any reason or no reason at all. Someone who doesn't have Facebook is just as good/bad of a reason as someone who's born in February because the dude who's hiring had an ex who was born in February.

Hiring is nasty business and if someone is suspicious of people who have no digital footprint then that's as good a reason to not hire as any other.

Some people seem to be under the impression that hiring is all fair, equal opportunity, non-biased and all, but nothing could be further from the truth.

If you want to hire differently, then run your own business where you can make that call, or advance to a position where they ask you to hire someone. Simple as that.

I still don't get the different reactions to facebook or google doing this and the NSA doing this.
